Good rod specs for small streams, native brookies

I will say, I had a similar experience on one outing with a Maxcatch glass rod, where a ton of fish were coming unbuttoned. It felt like the tip wasn’t sensitive enough to keep tension while I was stripping line in. I would have to imagine that there is some degree of build/material quality which influences that aspect of a rod.

I’ve fished lots of other glass rods, some very slow action (bend deep into the blank), but they still felt responsive enough at the tip to register and react to the movements of a thrashing fish and keep tension.

I fish a 7' 3wt exclusively on small mountain freestone streams. Perfect rod for the job.

I dont fish small water often. I like to use a 7ft 4in Thomas and Thomas Lotic, a glass rod. I like to use this rod on the Upper Willowemoc.

Any fly rod shorter than 7 feet is nothin but a toy. Unless you’re serious about a commitment to small streams I’d probably just take whatever 8.5” 4 or 5 wt you use for general use out there. You’ll appreciate the extra reach and ability to keep your line off the water after you modify (shorten) your leader to do what you need it to do.

There’s a story out there somewhere about Humphreys and Harvey fishing together on a small brookie stream where ole George out fished Joe bc he had an 8’ rod.

I'm old, so this might not matter much. Anyhow, I use a 6 1/2-foot, 4-wt, when I am targeting brookies, which I don't get to do much anymore. It is a nice small-stream rod with a moderately quick action, though if I were buying another one, I would get the same length but try a 3-wt. Mine is an old rod: an Orvis Rocky Mountain rod, one of Orvis's less expensive rods when I bought it.

I like to fish for brook trout with dry flies even if there is no obvious surface action.

I've noticed that to be the case more often than not on brookie streams. I fish a dry more than anything else. Love the visual aspect of fishing dries.
