Wrap Color Ideas for a Blue Blank?

my Team of engineers decided we all needed 'wrestler' names, and we should wrestle as a study break. I think my olive complexion had something to do with it, but 'CinnamonJoe' was born.


As for the single-foot guides, I hear you. I've never messed with them before this rod; they are something that has piqued my curiosity over the years, and I decided that I finally needed to give them a try to decide on if they offered me anything: functionally or aesthetically.

It was better when you were trying to charm me. Let's go with that one, instead.

As for the single foots, go nuts. Personally, I think snakes just look better and part of the fun of wrapping your own is the looks.

I'm told it makes a rod more flexible, I dunno. I wonder how much of a difference that tiny little bit of extra wrap can really matter.

Because of the awful color combinations? makes sense. This thread is keeping me from building a rod too.

I'm enjoying this thread. Although I am a habitual over-thinker... 😉

To be fair, the blank color is a challenge to match. My $0.02: Lean into the blue. I like the dark blue from post #3. I'd tip that with silver for just a touch of bling. I think it would balance the in your face blank color with a bit of class.

I appreciate all the input; I'm relatively inexperienced with rod building, so this has been as much about me trying to get feedback and ideas. I have been enjoying it, so far. LOL

If nothing else, trying all these wrap designs is giving me practice wrapping, and helping me see & start to correct faults in my technique.

Ya know, I think there's a great idea brewing here with the GT40 racing colors. Someone with rod building skills and an appreciation of GT40 team racing colors could build a whole commemorative set.

Besides the Gulf Racing Team iconic colors, there's red, white and black,

white with blue stripes,

black and white on black,
and that's just 3 teams I can recall from childhood.

Over a year ago, I had a quick phone conversation about this topic with Ron at H&H, in the context of assembling rods for a charity like Project Healing Waters, Casting for a Cure, etc. At the time he was willing to provide a "special price" for single kits, but I got busy with other things and didn't pursue it any further. I expect a vendor would be able to deduct a tax percentage if the final product goes to a non-profit.

This is Prowrap nylon, non-CP (requires CP if you want it true to color when sealed).

Main: #479 'Gulfstream'
Trim: #836 'Forged Steel'

There is a difference between a non-profit and a bunch of guys trying to get a cheaper price. This reminds me when I had my shop when someone would ask my price on my flies..."so what's your dozen price? $2.00 per fly X 12 was my answer."

Make the main wrap the light color and the trim wrap the dark color.

You are so close to making this look not horrible.

The dark blue and silver before the vegetable oil hack is what I envisioned. Since the oil significantly darkens the blue thread, maybe a royal or medium blue would be a better choice.
