I usually don't fish streamers this small or bright for smallies. This Fly has me rethinking fly selection.

I think you're right. The smallies love to eat panfish. Thought I'd give it a try with my favorite hook. It was very awkward attaching the eyes. I'm going to try another version with a straight hook. I do like the SLF fibers. They give it some panfish width.

It will catch trout. The fish don't care!

If you haven't tried, could skip the eyes and do a bunch of lead wraps at the lowest point of the hook. You might lose some of the headfirst dive, but it works well to add weight and as ballast to keep the hook point up.

You don't have to give away a spot, but I'm wondering if you caught those smallmouth near the Altoona-Johnstown area. I never fished for bass in April, but I'd sure give it a shot if they'll eat now. I always considered them a summer activity.

I live in somerset County, bass were caught in somerset County, this is prob the best time all year to smallmouth fish

I use EP Trigger Point fibers for the posts. I learned about their buoyancy versatility in a fly tying class. I know there are other similar synthetics out there too (from Fulling Mill, etc).

And a much cheaper alternative is a product called Bonnie Cord. Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

I really like widows web. Looks pretty similar to trigger point, but also works well.
