What Are You Tying Today? 2026

The white one is Gamechanger chenille and the green was just some estaz. The chenille brushed back nicer than the estaz, but thought I’d try.

He's still trying to describe "loose" tie in newest episode. Nice fly, is that hackle or belly hair on head of fly? That olive and yellow/gold is beautiful color combo

Mule deer hair wing with oversized grizzly hackle wrapped over it for the head. (All the hackle is oversized because I was just working out of my scrap box.)

Thread - Flo orange 140 Ultra
Weight - .015 lead wraps
Tail - Mallard flank fibers
Rib - Brassie hot yellow uni wire

Hook - Single salmon
Thread - Black
Tip - Oval silver tinsel
Tail - Golden pheasant crest
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
Body - Dubbed with yellow lamb's wool
Hackle - Light blue tied on as a collar and tied back and down
Wing - Dyed black squirrel tail tied low over the body
Cheeks - Jungle **** eyes or substitute
Head - Red ostrich herl

Author's Note

Tying Instructions: First tie in the ostrich herl and partially finish the head with thread without wrapping the herl. Then apply a narrow band of red enamel at the base of the head and, while it's still wet, wrap two turns of the ostrich herl. Finish the front portion of the head with black tying thread.

I was sitting at the vise this afternoon thinking about carp. So I decided to spin up one of my most productive carp patterns over many seasons. It’s Jack Gartside’s sparrow nymph tied in carp fly style. All natural materials with lots of contrast and movement (no flash or glue of any kind on this pattern). My experience is if I can get this fly down into the silt in front of an actively feeding carp and the fish doesn’t know I’m there it will more often than not eat it! The fly is also tied on one of my most favorite carp hooks - a size 6 Daiichi 1530. Tight lines and screamin’ reels - Carpers!
