Summer doldrums and lack of interest

Additional context: There are a number of small streams with wild rainbows along the NY/VT border and in the Greens. There are occasionally some big fish, but the little rainbows are about as discerning as dumb brookies.

Not exactly like catching two Delaware rainbows...

I hit a small stream this morning that I've never fished in summer before: 60 degrees! For the first time ever, I popped two (small) fish on the dry and the dropper. Double rainbow.

Unfortunately, no double bagger photo, as the hopper fish popped off as I was trying to get them both in the net. Pretty fun, though!

Only a high of 80 today... Trending in the right direction.
There's one particular wild brown trout stream in the Poconos that I've fished more than 40 times over the span of 22 years. Every trip was in either June, July, or August. Not one single time did I ever get a stream temp above 62F, not once.

It's still an awesome thing catching wild rainbows in Pa, regardless of size or brain capacity.

Elderberry time is a cure for these doldrums.

Sauerkraut time also works.

Beetlespin fished in any warmwater river for anything that bites. They work quite well in the “N Br Susquehanna” almost anywhere, lower Susquehanna in the free flowing portion, Juniata near Mifflintown, Schuylkill R in the Reading area…upstream and downstream, Delaware R in Upper Bucks Co, and most warmwater streams. I’ve hooked or caught Muskellunge, walleye, fallfish, SMB, RBSF and RB on even the smallest ones sold…those with a plain grub rather than the larger split tailed versions. Great all around lure that will boost your enthusiasm and that of your kids, plus it won’t break the bank. The bright green grub version seems to work best.

I agree to a point. I definitely get a summer depression once the luster of the summer grind wears off. And long drives to the shore points seems too expensive for short flukes in the surf.

I basically took off the month of July, but August was far kinder. I just had to remind myself to give my balls a tug, get up early, and quit early. I landed a dozen trouts in a NEPA crick this past Sunday, a mix of holdover and wild. Water was 65 at 11 AM when I quit. A couple small stream beauties in the mix too. I will def be out on Sunday this weekend, hopefully day two of a good cold front.

I’m looking forward to the end of summer and cooler weather. Fall is definitely my favorite time of year, with the exception of sunset coming earlier. But I definitely prefer cooler weather over the heat and humidity of summer, particularly here in Maryland.

Once things do cool down, I will focus on fall fishing…except that fall also means the return of travel baseball for my kids. I have been thinking about doing a 3-day trip up to Central PA for trout, which is about as much as I can negotiate with my wife (made possible because I have not taken a golf trip this year). I also want to get in some SMB fishing because this year has been a non-event for me in terms of warm water fishing.

I’ve tied lots of flies this year and I’d like to use them at some point. I just don’t want to until the weather is more comfortable. I don’t like wet wading on trout streams (think George Costanza and shrinkage), but I don’t like wearing the waders when it’s 90* and humid.

Fishing is multitudes better than golfing could ever dream of being. And don't waste your time in Central PA. There are no trout left; they've all been caught. There's nothing to see here, folks!

Golf has always been my main hobby and now that the kids are getting into it, I focus on it more than fishing. My wife also has made it clear that having two hobbies at once is not ideal, unless I take the kids along. I find enough fun in fishing once or twice a month.

I’d love to get out more often, but until one or both of my kids are old enough to safely wade and enjoy stream fishing, I’ll take what I can get. My 12 yr old has shown interest in fishing from time to time, but he does not have the patience yet for fly fishing.

It’s always good to be diversified. I currently have an injury that prevents me from getting in and out of waders and a boat where no dock is present. Fortunately I’ve been able to flounder fish, bank fish and shoot pool. I’d be in a bad spot if fly fishing for trout was all I did or knew.
