If you haven't glued the cap back on the rod, I have a feeling a second electroplating and polishing WITHOUT the 2000 grit sandpaper step just using a high quality ammonia free polish like Wright's and/or polishing with a Dremel and rouge would yield VERY shiny results.

Brief update:
No actual work has been done on the rod, since I was away on a short holiday last week. When I got back home, however, this was waiting in the mail after successfully winning an eBay auction:
A mid to late 1960s vintage South Bend Oreno-Matic Model 1130 D automatic reel. The box obviously shows signs of wear, but the reel itself is mint and I don't think it's ever been fished. It's got some backing and fly line of unknown provenance, and all mechanical features seem to be working as intended. Crucially, the original manual is also included.
Super excited to be back to continue this project (ordering supplies from Proof Fly Fishing this week), and love the idea of eventually fishing this with a period-appropriate, "Made in the USA" reel from the rod's manufacturer.

Nickel - $16 (Amazon) (This could have been $8, but I bought twice the needed amount in case I messed up)
Other material (vinegar, copper wire, salt, etc.) - Free (stuff I already had around the house)

Running total: $92

I had Trout Fisherman's Bible as a kid and remember it fondly. It was frequently on my bedstand.
The plating job looks good to me. You really can't get the finish on a corroded part back to original, but that looks pretty good.
That auto reel looks in great shape. I had an auto period, largely to tease some younger guys who always bought super high end gear.

I still have my copy of "The Trout Fisherman's Bible.' It's a cool book.
A number of years ago at a firehouse fishing flea market I scored "The Freshwater Fisherman''s Bible" by
Vlad Evanoff, "The Camper's Bible," and the Gunner's Bible both by Bill Riviere, and all three are in a slipcase and I also have a copy of the "Bass Fisherman's Bible,' by Erwin A. Bauer.

Nice! I admit I've never fished with one, but it seems... relatively straight forward, I hope.

Dear NOVABrewer,
Just use it on a 6-weight and be careful with the trigger. You can easily gut a fish and reel it down to the rod ferrule if you ain't careful with an automatic reel. 😉
