Recent Rain

Here in Chester County pretty much every stream is already below median flow. Forecast is for a lot more and we need as much as we can get, but hopefully not all at once. Haven't trout fished yet locally due to the low flows but have contented myself with lake fishing for pan fish.

Dear jifigz,

I tried out my new rotisserie for my Weber Kettle grill yesterday. Set it up, got it to temperature, loaded the chicken on the spit, added an applewood chunk and put the lid on it. Smoke was rolling nicely when the sky opened up biblically

In a ten-minute torrential downpour, the temperature dropped from 350F to about 110F. Thankfully, the fire stayed lit and 20 minutes later it was back to 350F. I completed the cook with just a minor delay. It was to be expected on the maiden voyage.

I can report that despite being drenched with torrential rain the electric motor on the Only Fire rotisserie performed without a hiccup. This thing will be a game changer! 😉

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂
Maybe I will add one of those to my collection. I am a long-time Weber Kettle user and supporter.

Riverwhy, I see Penns got another 2 inches and was at 1100 and line was headed straight up. Hopefully you tribs treat you better than the 2 inch brown out of Poe you texted me. Sorry Penns had to benefit at your expense.

Penns is now at 2,300 cfs and still rising. Most of the trips were already high too, so it maybe a day I start a puzzle. "I picked a bad week to stop drinking."

I am scheduled to head up and fish Kettle Creek this weekend. Do any locals have any reports? Should I make the trek?
I can see that the gauge height has doubled in the last couple days, but I don't know how low it was to start and what height would preclude decent fishing.

Kettle is fishable up to about 500 cfs or so, in select spots. 200-300ish is ideal. I was up there this past weekend and it was around 300 while I was up. Didn’t fish great, but we caught fish.

It’s at 2100 cfs and rising now. That’s definitely out of its banks. Kettle holds its water almost like a limestoner does, so it’ll be a slow fall. My guess is it’s shot for this weekend, but keep any eye on the gauge.

Some of the gauges are not working properly. Some such as Pocono creek have discontinued CFS and set a gauge base line of 9.41ft which is useless in determining what the actual flow is. Why this is I dont know. Someone I correspond with said it is intentional. I use Broadhead creek to get a estimate. Other locations discontinued temp readings. My camper on the East Branch Delaware is next to the Harvard gauge. I met the gal that checks the gauges and I txt when I have a question or I see something awry. She always responds in a timely manner.

BFC will probably be fine. Keep in mind when Penns and LJ are blown BFC see a large increase in angler numbers. Last Saturday BFC was very crowded. I should have gone for Brookies.

BFC got a good bump last night. Gage went up a foot. I would think it will hold flow pretty good through the weekend. The narrows can be tough in elevated flows.

Dave,
I think most farmers in Central PA have started finding out when your trip to Penns is and they plant their crops 7 to 10 days before it's scheduled. My God you guys have had some garbage luck going up there. We really needed the rain though.

I like to bestow blessing wherever I travel. Hoping by Sunday the creek should be back to normal, whatever that is. There haven't been any hatches that I observed in a while since May 1. The stream will likely explode with bugs this weekend no matter the water level and so long there is no more heavy rains.

I fished Spring Creek at Benner's on Friday and was shocked by the number of cars in the lot when I got there. I think that everyone that was planning on fishing Penn's or Little J went to Spring Creek because the other two were blown out. When I got their around 3PM, it was pretty brown, but it did clear up a bit by the evening.

Spring is usually the backup for the other big name streams for many people.

I do find the crowds at spring weird though. Its always busy when I don't think it will be, and dead when I think it will be busy.

The guy who had our site at Poe Paddy previous to us said he only fished Spring and Big Poe. He caught a few fish. We fished Monday after we got there. Mainly fished Poe. Caught 2 and
Missed a handful. Also met a guy who I think was on Pa Trout Council from Reedsville. He called Penns blown out. We fished the edges where Poe added some clarity to Penns. Nothing. There were actually fish rising on Penn’s at the big pool by the campground but we walked down too late. Then 2 inches last night so we came home.

If I had to guess, you probably met Gary Parzanese. That's my best guess as to who you met from Reedsville.
