Precision Fly and Tackle Opening New Shop in Allison Park (Pittsburgh)

Dear dudemanspecial,

While I have often lamented the loss of sole proprietor fly shops I have been dealing with Precision Fly and Tackle at their original Mt. Holly Springs location for many years. If they provide the same level of service at this new store that they do at the location I visit it should be a welcomed addition.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I have shopped in the flyfishers paradise location a few times and have no complaints.

I wish them luck. Not an ideal location due to parking and traffic. Route 8 is and can be dangerous trying to cross in that area coming from the north. I just don't see how a shop there could make money. Back in the day the building I believe was the old Barkus bakery.

I have to imagine that they did some research in terms of the location. It’s not where I would have expected a new shop to go. My assumption if we got a new shop was that it would be TCO and it would be somewhere on 22 near murrysville.

At this point, PFT is actually saving small fly shops by acquiring them. In days of old, I would agree that a bigger fish eating a smaller fish (pardon the pun) isn't a good thing. In this case though, it's just super difficult for small fly shops to survive. Pretty impressive with how PFT has been able to expand its footprint. I still can't believe they haven't opened a shop in the Lehigh Valley yet!

Yeah it seems pretty evident that they are doing something right business wise.

Don't get down that way too often, but it at least gives me something to do whenever the Mrs. drags me shopping along that stretch of Rt. 8.

Aside from International Angler towards Robinson, there really isn't a fly shop servicing the population hub in and around Pittsburgh for about 40 minutes in any direction. I know the fishing in SWPA isn't the best, but I also know that there are a good many guys like myself who make day trips out to the middle of the state as often as they can.

PFT in Allison Park will also be competition for Risen Fly, which is only about 45 minutes away...

My point is the area isn’t a barren wasteland as far as fly shops go…
Not anymore. We also had Fly Stop in New castle for a brief time in the last few years.

Keep in mind though, having a shop within an hours drive of Pittsburgh is different than being convenient to all Pittsburghers. If you have to drive across or around town to get there, you probably arent dropping in every week to grab a spool of tippet or pack of marabou.

I think the consumer wins in this case. International is a fine shop, but it is not TCO or Neshannock as far as inventory goes. Likewise, Risen and PFT will deliver a different selection and cater to a different customer (with overlap of course.)

Not necessarily on topic, but in a way, not necessarily off topic either, but..

I remember Steckler-Tibor..🙂 I got some nice India necks off Ed. Gingers and browns that would easily tie down to a two-hackle #16

The closest competition is probably Contented Angler in Lower Burrell.

Ultimatly they are all a +30 min drive from me and in the opposite direction I drive to fish, so I do most of my shopping online or in State College when I am out fishing and need something

I don't live in the city or drive to the city regularly anymore. I haven't had a decent nearby fly shop since the Fishing Post in Greensburg closed.
