Old, Stale, Negative Thread

I have noticed, at least in PA, more competition from the YT content creators makes them do more blatant things - like posting stream names - which the algo seems to like. If we stop watching the channels that have blatant or not spotburning, they will get less views. I have a lot of respect for the content channels where education comes first, even if it makes for less entertainment.

I guess some it serves a purpose. The instructional fly tying stuff does. But prefer books.

Never get a positive experience watching anyone fish a stream and post it. It’s just annoying.

You only get the true experience from going there by yourself. It’s your own experience. And is in your own memory. No need to document

It’s like people who go to concerts and video the concert the whole time. WTF? Just watch the concert and experience it for yourself.

My favorite was The Way of a Trout, that they played at a Main Line Fly Tyer's meeting back in the day. The music in that video is still in my memory, very mellow.
And, the narration done by Frederick Hutchinson was something to remember too.
I need to look that one up.

I'm not saying I've never watched fly tying videos. When I started fly fishing and tying, Tim Flagler helped me learn to tie big time. That's a super cool resource people in the past didn't have, and I like Tim's channel. His tying videos are presented in a classy manner and they're super helpful.

I believe I've discussed with some frequency on here how much time I've spent watching tightline videos. I feel like it's my go-to piece of advice to new tyers. I certainly didn't tie all the patterns, but my bad habits and I stayed up probably hundreds of nights just watching and absorbing techniques - first from Flagler and then from Craven, Galloup, the Orvis threeway, etc. For better or worse, YouTube was the only mentor I had available.

However, I think my personal disposition is also uniquely suited to hate-watching. I click on tons of stuff the algorithm throws at me that I know is going to be a turd. Hell, earlier tonight YouTube fed me a live stream from the bastard I was complaining about in my first post. I clicked just to make sure he was tying something annoying while singing along to some bullsh!t Pearl Jam song and cracking jokes to his chat. Spoiler: he was 😂The hate makes me strong.

Ok, gotta make good on my assurance that this is not just a social media complaint thread:

If I'm remembering correctly, in Trout (Josh, for whatever reason, the browser is not allowing me to access the text formatting buttons to follow MLA style; please don't deduct points), there's a part where Bergman is canoe fishing with a guide for pike. In his telling, they come upon a fallen tree with a squirrel running up and down the trunk above the water. The guide explains that a large pike lives under the tree and often eats the squirrels. Then - what a coincidence - the squirrel they're watching falls in, and a monster pike pounces on it! Of course, Bergman and the guide hurry over, and Bergman throws in a fly and - lo and behold - he catches that monster pike! What a hero!

This long, boring, disingenuous book, while I'm sure important in the historical progression of writing about fly fishing, is the turd of yesteryear. Did not finish it.

My enjoyment of FF social media or videos or whatever the right descriptor is (I'm just as happy not knowing, to be truthful), has increased five fold over the past week since I had surgery that destroyed the remaining hearing in my right ear along the way to getting a cochlear implant. (There is 2-3 week waiting period between surgery and implant activation). Not having to listen to the (often) execrable music or the self-celebratory scripting opens up new dimensions of appreciation for me and I recommend it highly. Even better, of course, is not letting myself get into a situation where I'm exposed to most of it in the first place.. all.

Off my lawn, you pubescent cretins..🙂

Never remember Marlin Perkins getting in the thick of things. I do remember him saying many times " I'll stay here in the truck while Jim( Fowler) tries to get that lion in net. Watch it Jim... hes a big male" or usually some thing on those lines.

To his credit he was probably in his 70's during the time of the show

Still...a great show when growing up.
I recall Jim as a guest on "The Tonight Show" when he would bring some animals for show-and-tell. He really took exception to Johnny Carson pointing out the Marlon Perkins had Jim do all the dangerous stuff.

As for the OP, some comments...
I generally look at online content - generated by AI or by actual people - with a buyer beware attitude. I'll generally search for content based only on my interests. If it's obvious that the content won't meet my interests or needs, I just move on and chalk it up to my own wasted few minutes. I'm not treating any of it as peer reviewed or research paper citable information anyway.
I somewhat agree with the OP though... especially when it comes to outdoor programs. On a recent visit to my in-laws (we no longer have cable) I tried to find an enjoyable hunting or fishing show to pass some time. I couldn't find anything related to deer hunting that didn't showcase trail cam footage, baiting/feed plots (on so much privately-owned acreage), brand-new off-road-only vehicles, or enclosed villas on stilts from which one can shoot a buck which has been tracked by camera since its momma dropped him in the leaves four-five years ago. Any fishing shows I found involve boats and electronics that I can never afford, so they were of no interest to me either. Nothing about flyfishing... I haven't seen a good flyfishing show on TV since Jose Wejebe died.

Go Pro's are the worst. If it's mounted on their head, I get sea sick. If it's on their chest, all I see is hands and the reel.
The sound of the reel and line through the guides goes right through me

FYI - There is also a book by the same name by R.P. Van Gytenbeek that follows the film.

Everyone's favorite brookie clout chaser invasively forced his way onto Galloup's podcast this week. They gave up reading his ranting letter halfway through and just sorta scratched their heads.

He's tried to push his agenda into the spotlight on most of the freshwater podcasts I listen to at this point. Dude is harder to get rid of than herpes.

Anyone remember Wally Tabor? I paid a couple dollars of my grass cutting money to see his adventure films. That was in West Chester Pa 60 plus years ago.
