I have enjoyed the journey of this topic. I was particularly happy to show my wife the replies that supported my contention, though she seemed to like the ones that were a little contrary. I liked the guys who said "The fish don't care," since that is a line I often use when defending myself when my wife tells me how slobby I look.

this thread and memories of the summer heat inspired me to cut 5 oz of unused pockets, zippers, and flaps from my lightweight super taklpak orvis vest... crazy that the entire back surface of the vest had 3 layers of nylon for a huge pocket I never used. should be much cooler now -- with enhanced resale value 🙂

empty vest now 14 oz

Just buy a mesh vest to begin with. Mine is a Fishpond "Sagebrush". They are much cooler than one made of solid fabric.

That vest does look nice...but I carry some extra stuff and will have to see if all my gear can go in its pockets. Of course you cant add pockets to a vest but you can take them off

I have often wondered why I feel I need to carry all my fly boxes with me. As far as flies/streamers and such it all depends on what I'm fishing in selecting what items I carry. If I'm trout fishing I don't bring top water poppers with me. When bass fishing I don't carry all my trout flies - only the largest. It makes more since for me to travel light instead of adding weight. I have the mesh vest as well, and I can pack it with more items than I really will use.

Most of my fishing is for mountain brookies, with hikes in. You can fish for brookies all day long, but the heat was brutal last summer, and I dont need a lot of flies and gear.

Last straw for my very durable orvis 'tak-l-pakl' vest was a winter hiking/fishing trip a few weeks back... the vest was warm under an open jacket hiking in 40F air, with some snow on the ground! (And I have been wearing it in the summer?)

The orvis is a great vest, but at least for me, it's not the right vest for hiking-to-fish. I'm goin to the fishpond sagebrush mesh, and will use jackets zipped/ unzipped, etc., to adjust warmth in winter on hiking vs fishing segments of trips. Thanks for vest advice and info, WTT...

Strange as it may be.....Do we really use the vest in order to help produce or keep in our body heat? If its warm out don't over clothes yourself - this could lead to overheating. If it's winter time and you are doing long hikes to get to the fish area, carry your jacket/thermals with you. You do not want to sweat in the winter time, This will only freeze up and make you colder. I have hiked in the mountains above the 6000 ft level with pants and a light sweatshirt on. If you know that you have a good distance to travel and the terrain conditions, dress appropiate for it. Carry extra warm clothing and most importantly, carry/drink plenty of water.

My old vest was too warm for me to hike in, both in summer and winter, and I don't need all the space it provides. Don't like to sweat in the winter definitely. New mesh sagebrush vest should be much cooler. Always try to have good amnt of water, and will try to remember to carry even more.

YUP! I had one of them vests as well. Switched to the mesh style. I don't need a vest to keep me warm or keep the warmth in. Some vest do just that.

I have an old Orvis Tacklepack usually filled to the brim depending on where I'm going. Add a bottle of water and a couple of Snickers and I'm good to go for the day, my back willing. Just wish I had the mesh version but I still have a bunch of years left in my current vest. Tight lines,

I got a fishpond sagebrush mesh vest, and found some columbia airgill fishing shirts at after-christmas sales... this setup should be cooler, the shirt is heavily vented both back and sides.

That vest looks just like mine except for the color. I'm sure you will really like it when it gets warm this summer. IMO a great choice.

I tried to find a sagebrush vest in the other green color! But this will be OK. with open sides on the vest and these airgill shirts hopefully I wont sweat as much this year.
