I know in the last couple years, we discussed a decline in hoppers. I'm seeing a lot more this year on my runs along lower Middle Creek and Hammer Creek in Lancaster county. Not as many as some years, but way more than the last 2. Has anyone had much success with hoppers this year? The ones I see on the road are absolutely huge.

Dear JeffP,

In years past I've usually had plenty of hoppers in my yard beginning early to mid-August. This year I've finally seen my first couple this week.

I don't know if you can read anything into that. For years I've been lamenting the decline of lightning bugs in my yard. This year I had more than I have seen in the last ten years combined and they were here for 6 weeks or more, from late June to early August.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I agree on the lightning bugs. Noticed a lot more this summer. (Lancaster Co.) Can’t comment on hoppers.

I’ve noticed a lot more grasshoppers this year near my local streams in Dauphin County…especially in the afternoon. My backyard sounds like a cricket orchestra as I type this in the AM…they seem to be everywhere right now. I’ve also had a lot of deer “hop” over my fence to eat our plants (oops…that wasn’t the the intension of your post…sorry🤣; although I do use deer hair on my GFA Hopper flies).

I've also seen many grasshoppers this year, in Centre and Clinton. I don't have any theories about the cause of the increase.

I posted here last year about the lack of hoppers in SC PA.

Have seen many more lately. One was on my garage door the other day and I loaded up my camera with pics to try and duplicate color and markings this winter.
