Fly Fishing Elitism (from an outsiders perspective)

"Slate run is a beautiful small stream. Not sure if I would consider it one of the best trout streams in the state but that's just my opinion. There are other streams that share similar features.

Why are you so bent out of shape that maybe 40 miles of stream in the state are reserved for fly fishing?"

I responded:

"If the PFBC decided to open Slate Run to all methods of trout fishing that's when you would find out which group of anglers who would "get all bent out of shape." Therefore, your argument that non-fly-anglers shouldn't get bent out of shape because there are only a "few" miles of FFO water is not a defendable position."

headhunting22 replied:

"It’s very much a defendable position. There are probably 100 miles of class A trout water for every mile of FFO water. (That was a generalization, you see what I’m saying). Like I mentioned in another response, fly anglers and spin/bait fisherman work the water differently. Fly anglers work water with more caution/element of surprise. I don’t see why it’s a big deal to give them a few miles of water when there is so much more trout fishing water for spin anglers."

My response:

So, your defense that non-fly-anglers shouldn't get bent out of shape because there are only a "few" miles of FFO water is because fly-anglers work the water differently. You're kidding, right?

I can just see you working as an attorney for the PFBC defending FFO water on public land in front of the judge. The judge asks you why a privileged group (fly-anglers) should have water set aside on public land exclusively for them and you stumble around a while, get a little tear in your eye, your lip quivers a little, and you mumble, "Well..., well..., we fish the water differently than spin fishermen."

By the way, your statement that fly-anglers work the water with more caution/element of surprise (compared to spin fishermen) is knee-slapping funny to me. I've seen enough fly-anglers wearing light-colored clothing/white hat/light-colored breathable waders fishing downstream at their boot-tips in bright sunshine with light reflecting off of their long rods to question your statement. They also do this minutes after another fly-angler has just fished the water, which doesn't exactly add to the element of caution and surprise. I wear full camo, fish upstream so that the trout don't see me coming and cast my spinner far ahead of me to precise spots most likely to hold trout. I also almost never fish where another angler has just fished.

If I had such disdain for fly fishing, I don’t think I would join a “Fly Fishing” forum just to post about how foolish my opinion of fly fishing may be. But I guess that’s just me.
Assuming this derogatory opinion is about me, I've found that the personal attacks always come when no constructive argument about what I've written can be made.

By the way, I've gotten a number of congratulatory emails from level-headed fly-anglers on here over the years telling me I've "hit the nail on the head" with my comments, noting that I'm willing to stick my neck out and say things that other people on here know are accurate but are afraid to say or admit. (My email address is FrankTroutAngler@aol.com.)

I have no distain for the act of fly-fishing. Can you show me something I've written that proves you are correct or are you just making this up to see if it will stick with some people? This spring a friend of mine decided to take up fly-fishing. I gave him a brand-new rubber net, a forceps, a beautiful fly box, and 200 - 300 flies (mostly ones I've found), including quite a few beautiful dry flies that my brother tied and gave to me back in the 1970's. Yessiree, I guess this shows I really have a distain for fly-fishing.

I love going out on opening day, standing in a crowded stream, stocked against better judgement, and throwing 30 and 40 foot backwards. I think ffing only areas were invented to get us the hell outta the way.

Actually, frank, your post #338's sarcasm about building a $10M lodge for fly-fishermen shows disdain for fly-fishermen. I hope this shows that posters opposing your opinions are correct in what they are saying.

My reply to rrt's comment at the top of this post: Where in my post #338 about building a $10M lodge for fly-fishermen do I show a distain for the act of fly-fishing? Seems to me the sarcasm in post #338 is directed at fly-fishermen, not the act of fly-fishing. There is a huge difference. And before anyone asks, yes, I do have distain for some individual fly-fishermen, like ones who make lies up about me and stab me in the back. Maybe you know such a person, rrt? Again, I have no distain for the act of fly-fishing. Never did. If someone enjoys casting flies to trout, I say more power to them. Why would I have distain for that?

We've got it so good in this state, but we just aren't ever satisfied, are we? This thread has turned stupid. We literally have many lifetimes worth of water to fish in PA. A few delayed harvest, a few FFO, whatever. I don't care if they do or don't exist. It doesn't matter.

Y'all remember that fish fry I was gonna have? Just had it. It was delicious. I fried about 12 lbs of fish. Crappie, bluegill, and LMB fried with French fries, coleslaw, and fresh pear pie for dessert. I did two different breadings, one a beer batter and one a thinner coating.

LMB tastes just like the crappie once dipped in the hot oil. 😉🎣🐟🤤

Here's the real question... How can someone spend a lifetime pursuing trout as their preferred quarry and never become intrigued enough to want to dive head first into fly fishing?

Serious question.

You summed up this thread now after 370 posts in the second sentence.

I second this question entirely as well. In addition, we all need to remember the root purpose of the entire sport of fishing and enjoy a good ole fashion fish fry from time to time!

Dear lycofisher,

I agree but my wife won't eat freshwater fish. She just won't.

Maybe I need to catch a nice channel cat and fillet it and tell her it's fresh haddock I bought at the store. I do like to eat fish, even freshwater fish, but see no sense in keeping them if we both don't eat them.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Fix her a tilapia dinner and tell her afterwards that it is a freshwater fish.

Tim,

When those sunfish were breaded, fried, and dipped in tarter, they were every bit as good any fried fish I've ever had, including saltwater fish.

Let's meet at Little Buffalo in the spring and you can take some fillets home to your wife. I bet you can fool her in to eating them.

I like fish but would never eat Tilapea. The fish predominately comes from settling ponds in SE Asia.
True, also South America. I should have mentioned that. I don't eat imported farm raised fish either, but some tilapia are raised in the US. Read the packaging before purchasing.

Tim, on second thought, buy a couple walleye filets and try to pass it off as haddock. better yet, buy haddock, and tell her afterwards that it was walleye. 😉
