Please, my first hard drive was a proper 5.25" full height MFM, but you could format 'em RLL and squeeze an extra 20% out of them or something. It was 20 megabytes. Mega, not giga. That still blows my mind to put into perspective.

I've also had ESDI drives. SCSI1, SCSI2, and Ultra SCSI. Also, unlike Apple folks, I know it's pronounced "scuzzy" and not "sexy" no matter what they tried to tell you. 🙂 DC2120 tapes. DAT tapes. DLT tapes. God, does anyone still use tapes?

I also owned a couple of NeXTstations for several years. Go ahead, I know you're a little jealous. We used them at work because they were cheaper than 21" monitors.

I think the heavy pivot is ti seems like easy money, and people are going to use them. Computing grows exponentially every day, and there's been a massive rush to offload everything into "the cloud."

That includes hyperscale blade servers that pack more compute into smaller spaces than ever before. It's not only more efficient, but it's better. Very few big physical boxes that do one thing exist anymore, now everything is mostly virtualized and lives on a software simulation of a computer that can simply be moved to another host. The host are giant storage arrays built by packing 300-600 hard drives into a cabinet. One fails, it doesn';t matter as they others carry the load and you replace the dead soldier. Blade servers work the same way. If a component dies, you yank out that blade and slap a new one in. Hot spares keep the whole thing moving right along.

All of that stuff needs to go somewhere. And again, I ask you, where would you like it to go? Who would you like to safeguard your data, American countries or other "allied" European countries where we trust them to have some semblence of physical security or some random place in India where you don't know who actually has access and if anyone watching the door cares. Or, perhaps you feel we should just offload it to Africa, I mean, plenty of spac,e right, probably happy to get money for their economy and local warlords who I am sure are going to be happy to keep thsoe facilities running. Or, again, the PRC. I mean, no danger there, right?

Its gotta go somewhere. Decide where you want it. "No!" is not an option.

As a whole, while adding some positive to society, this crazy lightning speed has been a net negative on our society, on our physical and mental health. We are not better as a result.

Actually I can say the same thing about you. That you don't know what's it's capable of. You assume that what it's capable of is good. You assume the people controlling it and building it are doing so for the common good...that's a huge assumption. You assume no negative affect on society, or our environment.
If you asked AI 20 years from now, I wonder if AI would say these data centers are good for our society and environment.

I absolutely hate the idea of large data centers, but they are a necessary evil and a sign of the times. This AI has a looong way to go yet, so hold onto your seats. When I use ChatGPT, it makes me aware of the need for data centers. The amount of accurate, detailed information it provides is mind boggling! I use it many times a day.
I still don't want a data center in MY neighborhood. 😆

The key is picking the right LLM and asking the right questions.

You'd be surprised at how far it can take things. ChatGPT is fantastic at producing images, actually. But you gotta be careful how you ask for things or you will end up for rip offs. Also the "basic" tier free model just usually devolves into giving you lists. Make sure you ask it for "realistic answers" and to not glow you up.

Gemini is great for current events. It's great for having a quick precis done of a current event without having to dig through a thousand heavily biased websites, you just get one distilled down. Same thing about realistic answers and not glowing you up. Gemini's safety filters are overtuned.

Grok.. I never use it.

Claude is surprisingly well adapted to working in your typing style. It's disturbing how you start to feel like having a conversation. I use it constantly to help break things down. I hand it a manual, ask it to read it and spit back interesting things and it's consistently pointed the right stuff out. I can then ask it how to do things and it just spits it out without effort. I'd literally love to share a perfect conversation. In three questions it gave me the proper breakdown of which divisions would never fire at the same time, then had it modify to allow the most drift of the various points while still favouring not firing, then the exact times each division took while it handed me back the number of minutes, or hours, between those splits.

No one's doing that math in their head. It took about 10 seconds for each.

But ask it "where should I go fshing?" Or "What flies do I use for Swatara Creek in July?" and it will be forced to give you ****** answered based on the information distilled from a thousand other creeks in July.

Instead, ask it to search for that answer. It will hand all those web results, distilled down to just what you need, in 15 seconds.

That said, Claude will only glow you up. In Claude's eyes you can do no wrong.
