Big Springs

My kid went to ****inson. This was the "back way" out of town. He was there 4 years and I didn't fish the Letort or Big Spring in those four years. Neither did he. Shame on him. 😉

Hey dudeman

I’m with you I have fished there at least 3 times and from 4-5 different spots back in 2020 and never seen any fish including the ditch and out from the parking lot, i believe there used be a little dam or stone pile i used to stand on.

Believe it or not, Big Spring is very deceptive.
I once sat on the driveway bridge at the second parking lot while Sasquatch was fishing it. I keep pointing out fish. There had to be about 20 rainbows there. He couldn't see them, then suddenly he did. And then we was taken back by how many fish there actually were.

You would think in that gin clear, slow moving, shallow water that spotting fish would be easy. It isnt until you get an eye for it. The rainbows camouflage themselves very well and can almost look translucent.

Granted that was prior to 2020. I have not been back there in close the 10 years. It is possible it took that much of a dive, but I doubt it.

I have a question do most folks fish in the stream or casting along the stream.

My guess is along the stream

Did anybody have luck one way versus another

I agree 100%, fishing the ditch from the grass you often see nothing, but once you go up on the dam you can see dozens.

There's a couple different ways to fish it, depending on what tactic you're using. Dry fly fishing can be a bit tricky, given the variable currents from weed beds, etc. One of the most productive ways to fish is to "dap the edges", meaning dap your streamer along the weed beds and hang on. Ambush attacks from the weeds are exciting. Those fish know how to used the aquatic vegetation to their advantage. You won't always see them, but that doesn't mean they aren't there.

Big Spring is absolute gem and one of the few streams that fishes well through winter, given it's stable ground water source.

Here's a brookie I caught below "The Ditch" back in 2024. Big Spring will make you a better angler in every sense of the word!

There are spots where a slip into the water is possible, but wading a limestone stream like Big Springs, Letort, Green Springs or Falling Springs can get you into real trouble in the silt.

It is best to approach all of them from the bank, you will spook less fish, have less issues and it will make you a better angler.
