It's a form of virtue signaling. I wouldn't be overly bothered by it. It's just the way of the world. Someone will always know better and more often than not, they'll be eager to tell you how much better they know...

You're excited about your success and you wanted to share. Very normal behavior. Take the lesson on water temp but try not let those people drag down your excitement. When I was newer, I fished in temps that were too high. I still do sometimes. Don't sweat the petty things.
 
BTW - when I fished the Lacky in June, there was a lot of moss floating on the water - in Archbald
Made it really tough to fish.
Was that just temporary?
Or something that happens frequently there?
Have never seen it on lower parts of the river
 
we have a fish, fly, location, and some conditions - this could be edited and moved to stream reports, which is a member only forum section and that would make this less about a burn and more about a report. just a thought.
 
Honestly, I think the post is fine as is and where it is. The OP didn't write it up as a stream report, and he is showing off a fish that he's proud of. And, to the OP, it is a dang nice brown, and congratulations to you for catching it.

Yes, people might be telling you to be careful of stream temps, handle fish properly, etc, but they only do this out of respect for the resource. These are considerations that come with more knowledge and time in the sport, and as you pointed out, the brown trout is not a native species, so if you want to fish for them and face the scrutiny of others in the trout angling community, go for it. If you aren't breaking the laws, then fish and have fun. We fish for enjoyment, and obviously catching that fish gave you great enjoyment. It would give me enjoyment, too. Yes, I try to watch the stream temps, and I don't fish if the water is 68 degrees or higher, but that is my choice.

Once again, congratulations on the nice catch, and fish to make yourself happy.

Thank you. I understand people's opinion on the fishing ethics and personally scrutinize myself when I could have done something better. It's been a learning experience. I don't understand the hostility and straight up arrogant behavior of some of the comments I've seen. There also have been post from the local fly shops website that show temps taken at the warmest time in the evening at archbald and Scranton. Those sections are downstream and archbald isn't the only spot with cool mine discharge. There are locations in Simpson and jermyn with the same cool mine discharge.The temperatures were likely much cooler in the morning.

Don't be too confused by it. This thread had me thinking that this place really has not changed since the mid 90's. The behavior sometimes on this website makes me think of this verse for some reason.

Everyone thinks they are right , all the time in this society. Sometimes I think people fear being wrong more than they fear the action. They also think their ways are the best ways and anyone not following that way or the way of the pack mentality is easily demonized. Truth is, none of us know much at all and are easily compared to fools.

Sure, the Lack gets warm. It's probably better not to fish it in the summer for the fish you catch. It's also probably better for them not to fish at all. Or you could just harvest them legally.

Point is in the grand scheme of things it is so unimportant. It really is. Enjoy yourself and your fishing. Im not about to string you up or murder you with my speech over it. So many other things that are so much more important to put your energy into than anger over fishing or strife over words. It took me a long time to learn and I'm still learning.

As you learn the river, I suggest you branch out and fish more of it and start considering the types of habitat and areas you find these bigger fish in. Its been a few years since I've been up there to fish it but I used to frequent it often. It has a number of little secrets to learn. If you ever need some help or advice hit me up Ill see what I can offer.

Thank you for passing on your insight. I hope that others can adopt that mindfulness. As far as the river goes, it's been treating me good. I've had a few times I got skunked, but mostly had luck. Even had one morning with a bunch of risers taking my midge and sulphers. Still plenty of river to explore though I have not tried archbald and below.

When the weather cools down you should start fishing sections of the lower river. IMO it is superior to the areas you are fishing. Some sections of the river are Class A but I believe that they move around as the seasons change and also depending on the year classes and subsequent years it can vary. So what was class A last year might not be this year and vice versa and likewise what was Class A in the spring, might not be in the summer and vice versa. However, I believe the lower river and the further down you get holds a more sparse population but a good head of larger specimens.

It is. It's why I coined the term "Fly Fishing Woke". A LOT of virtue signaling goes on in our sport.

But yeah-gotta watch them temps in the Summer. I didn't jump on the O/P because hey-we all do things in ignorance. I did it too back in my early days of fly fishing. Then people TAUGHT (not virtue signaled or scolded) me about safe water temps, etc. etc. etc.

Nice fish. Watch the temps, but you're doin' well.
 
I prefer to call it setting a good example. But the anger towards people that don't know any better is uncalled hard for. What better way to turn people off to their excitement over something new? We need more in the sport not less. Why wouldn't we want others to get a chance to experience the joys of fishing and the outdoor life? It seems to be the exact thing we are complaining about. People today are disconnected from the natural world. Sure I get ticked off when I see someone in my favorite hole or a car parked along a stream I planned to fish. Take a deep breath and you'll get over it. And I'm sure you can figure out a way to subtly tell someone to watch the stream temps.

Agreed! A kindly worded PM goes a long way.

It seems to me that the social media age exacerbates poor impulse control. It's too easy to pound out a diatribe in reaction to a post rather than trying to guide from a standpoint of empathy and mentoring.
