True but mayflies dont have flaming asses either, the purpose isn't to match the hatch.🤣

There is a guy who ties those things and uses them for stike indicators but with a hook. Catches fish on them too

Sure they can. But thats still not what hot spots are for, those flies are generally called egg laying etc.. and those sacs are never red.

That's a good question.

Based on my research, and very short time spent up that way on a few streams years ago, its a mix. They appear to be what we would call 'Freestone' in PA, at 1st glance, but most have significant sand bottoms, some have more subterranean spring influence than others, many in the forest are stained with tannins. I think they will be similar what I encountered in the UP of MI last year. Pure limestoners, that the Driftless area southwest of there is re-nowned for, they are 'not quite'.

I would suggest packing a few cress bugs, scuds and sculpins just in case.

Lot of great replies but I figured I’d just add one fly I haven’t seen recommended. Sexy Walt’s worm size 14 or 16. This is coming from a pocono guy but works well in my area.

Believe it or not but sometimes the brook trout in Shenandoah National Park with get locked in on specific hatches so I do carry quite a few other patterns.

How small? I like this idea. (Though my brook trout waters are mostly short plunge pool situations, so I didn't list a streamer because I mostly don't even try.)

I mostly use a master splinter pattern in size 8 streamer hook. This is something I break out for the deep waterfall pools. The hope is to entice the larger 9-10” trout. Fishing a bigger fly like this can also screen out the small guys that would rush to a smaller dry and risk spooking the pool boss.

I like to use a strip of zonker leather for a tail - it gets a great wiggling action. I have the best luck fishing the mouse like a bass popper almost - retrieving in spurts and pauses. Often see a V wake of a fish tracking it that will smash it on the pause.
