I sent this note to some friends in September 2016:
“I drove through the Park early yesterday morning to check out the Madison River near West Yellowstone. There has been a large fire (over 40,000 acres) burning near there for the past few weeks, and I didn't know if the smoke from the fire would be unbearable. However, it rained much of the day on Monday, and nighttime temperatures there fell to 28° so I hoped the fire and smoke situation had improved. As I approached West Yellowston from Madison Junction a dense fog hung over the valley. At first, I thought it was smoke from the fire, but there was no smell. So, I parked my truck along the river, to check things out. It was fog after all.
By mid-morning the sky cleared, and the sun came out. What a wonderful day to be out of doors.”
