What Are You Tying Today? 2026

I like Charlie Craven and his patterns, but that is an Iris Caddis with some deer hair, isn't it? I realize all new fly patterns are mostly variations of existing patterns.
Seems similar. Craven just moved the loop backwards. Maybe on the Iris it was supposed to be a wing and on the Hellion it's the body? I would venture a guess that both Craven and Matthews were inspired by LaFontaine's sparkle emerger caddis.

A less flashy kind of blowtorch. Hare’s ear body and natural CDC, no tinsel.

Side note: does anyone else just use sally hansens in place of UV resin? I thought about getting a torch and everything, but hard as nails has been working pretty good for me

I use hard as nails for finishing regular nymphs but when you coat the whole body for a perdigon style nymph doesn’t it take forever to dry?

Not sure how long it takes to dry tbh. It probably does take a while, but I usually coat the fly and then stick the hook into a foam pad to dry overnight, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me.

I use SHHAN. I bought the whole UV get up and then realized it brings very little to my bench for the money. It’s good for built up heads but after that it doesn’t do much more than SSHAN for a lot less money for me. I’ve never tied a fly and immediately tied it to my leader. I stick my flies in a block of foam where they can spend the next couple weeks to dry if they want but it only takes a few minutes as your only putting a thin coat over things. No different than applying and drying on whole fingernails.
