Size 14 SBR Sulphur Numph. 1st one and I jacked the tail up a little bit. Not sure why this stupid easy pattern is giving me the fits. View attachment 1641247766

Can you direct me to a pattern for this fly. Looks very cool!

Henry Ramsey has a nice Sulphur nymph pattern in his book Eastern Hatches. Many people use a pheasant tail which works well. However the nymph is a blocky squarish shape like @SlingingWets
tied.

This was my old buddy’s favorite fly. I still tie them today and crush fish on them. I’ve never fished them dry but more like a wet fly/streamer. They will be on my list at some point this winter. Thank god I still have 2 legit jungle **** necks. Great Job BTW!

Thanks. In 46 years of tying I have never acquired any jungle fowl necks and I just don’t like the look of the synthetic ones that are out there. I do enjoy substituting other materials to try to achieve somewhat of the same look as what the original pattern had called for - so you can see that I substituted another material for the jungle fowl eye cheek feathers on that Hornberg fly.

these nearnuffs have many "parts" which i tend to do in batches. did some mono eyes, did some feather claws and i needed more lead eyes. i use a piece of cardboard to line up a bunch of them and then use nail polish or paint.

i think these are cool looking flies, kinda fun to tie too. i'm fine tuning the recipe
before i tie up a supply of different sizes and colors. this is pretty close other than
i left off the bit of rabbit that is part of the mouth area over the eye stalks and a webbier
feather for the palmer would be closer to the original design.

Tip - Silver oval tinsel followed by fluorescent white floss
Tail - Two sections of barred wood duck feathers back to back
Butt - Black ostrich feather
Rib - Silver oval tinsel
Body - Gudebrod HT Braid 1/8 black (originally the body was made of stretched and lacquered black Krystal flash)
Underwing -Two strands of pearly white oval micro tinsel and one strand of fluorescent white floss
Wing - Gray fox fur
Throat - Black hen

Author's Note

I created this artificial fly in July 1998. My first salmon caught with this fly was on the Matane River. Effective in both clear and cloudy weather, brown or clear water, I often return to the Zebra.

Author's Note

The pattern for this fly, came from the fine book by Bruce Ferguson, Les Johnson, and Pat Trotter, Fly Fishing For Pacific Salmon. They write that this fly is a Bristol Bay Lodge pattern. It is said to be a good pattern for freshwater Coho.

tail- orange over brown rabbit
lead barbell eyes
antenna - gold crystal flash/blk spanflex/olive barred sili leg (two strand each)
eyes - mono/uv resin/ hanson's
mouth parts - brown over orange rabbit
body - Whitlock NearNuff crayfish Nat brown w/band of Nat orange - palmered w/olive grizzly
claws- hen back

Size 14 Guide’s Choice Hare’s Ear.

Wanted a supper buggy bead head hares ear so I used a pine squirrel dubbing loop over simply brushing out the dubbing.

For a size comparison, here’s a 3.8mm tungsten bead surrounded by a small group, or I should say a group of small Griffiths Gnats. Size 26.

I’m glad I didn’t drop any of them on my carpeted floor when I took this picture. I’m still looking for that #6 streamer hook that I dropped there earlier.
