#12 Gray Fox

Nice looking Catskills style fly. I have seen so many wildly different flies called a “gray fox” - I honestly have no idea what one is?

Just tied these on a number 14 nymph hook.
I actually might use these for ice fishing!

A Gray Fox is actually now classified as the same species as the March Brown ( Maccaffertium vicarium).

They usually hatch a little later than the MB's, and are usually a little lighter in color and a size smaller. HTH.

Yup, I remember reading that a few years ago. I still call them what the old guy taught me when I started fishing the Pine.

Some midge dry flies in sizes 22-24. I wanted to try the Craig Matthews zelon midge, but I used EP trigger point fibers for the wings and pupal shuck.

This pattern is listed in Mel Marshall's, Steelhead, Copyright 1973 as one of the top two dozen Winter Steelhead flies to be counted on. He writes that this fly is sometimes tied with a white or grizzly hackle collar.
