What Are You Tying Today? 2025

It's clearly a very effective nymph. My BS is just that I'm stuck in a cycle of tying the same patterns. I don't currently have a demand to expand, but it doesn't make for very compelling contributions to a tying thread 🤷‍♂️

Your flies are great and I appreciate them. I’m a novice tier and have gotten a lot of great ideas from postings which makes it fun at the vise and even more fun on the water.

Maybe I just need to move closer to a river with great technical dry fly fishing so I have more of a reason to tie. I'll run that logic by the wife and see what I get...

Continuing in my study of gamechangers, I tried my hand in tying a feather changer this morning. It took me a WHILE but the results are not too bad for my first time around! Of course, I had to go and crowd the eye of the hook with my thread, but otherwise it works well. Tested it out in an aquarium I have lying around and it swims nicely.

Can't wait to put this on 2x tippet and lose it to a tree!

Note: The main reason I crowded the eye so much is that I wanted a larger profile on the head, so I tied in some marabou fluff overtop the saddle hackle.

So after reading the pheasant tail thread I'm trying to learn the pattern and tried a few tonight , and I feel like I'm getting really good at cursing and watching pheasant tail or peacock herl unwind , I imagine this is part of this pattern ?

Practice, Practice, Practice. The bottom line is my flies are never up to the standards I try to hold myself to either. For example, the hackle was too long in the picture I posted earlier of a Catskill March Brown I tied. Will it catch fish? Hell yea it will - which is why I didn't toss it. I noticed it and adjusted on the following flies. Someone had mentioned it before but when you tie a particular pattern, tie a dozen. Each fly will get better and better and better. I should also mention that after you tie your first, reference one that someone really good tied and adjust your proportions, body thicknesses, etc. on the 2nd fly. Then do the same for the rest.

Most importantly, don't give up. It will start to click after some time.

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much. It will catch fish. If you want some constructive criticism - It looks like your bead was too big for the hook you were using. That fly is more of a "perdigon" style fly and if you use a jig hook and a proper size slotted bead it will push the bead more forward and not force you to shorten the body. Unless you were going for that squirmy look that the oversized bead created. Your ribbing wraps were spaced nicely.

I am just starting to learn so any feedback is welcomed. Im going to order a few beads and hooks. What size bead would I use on a size 18 or 20 hook?

2.0 up to 2.5 mm for me on hook that small. If you are just starting out I’d say stick with somewhat bigger hooks for a little while. The tiny ones certainly are more challenging to get right.

I used monofilament. 4 pound I think it was.

That’s nice, it picks up the color of the dubbing nicely on some of them.
