Author's Note

This is a steelhead variation of an old Scottish wet-fly pattern that dates back to about 1830.

Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel
Body - Dubbed with fluorescent orange rabbit fur
Hackle - Fluorescent orange tied on as a collar and tied back and down
Wing - Dyed black deer hair tied over the body

Author's Note

This fly was taken from an original pattern of Jim Pray's that was never fully developed. This fly is also tied with a fluorescent green body, yet it is referred to as an Orange Demon variation.

What is it? Have never seen this one. Weaving chenille to get that body?

It's a variation of the B*tch Creek Nymph. Yes, ultra chenille woven/braided for the body. These use to be in every shop and catalog in the country.

Continuing in my study of gamechangers, I tried my hand in tying a feather changer this morning. It took me a WHILE but the results are not too bad for my first time around! Of course, I had to go and crowd the eye of the hook with my thread, but otherwise it works well. Tested it out in an aquarium I have lying around and it swims nicely.

Can't wait to put this on 2x tippet and lose it to a tree!

Note: The main reason I crowded the eye so much is that I wanted a larger profile on the head, so I tied in some marabou fluff overtop the saddle hackle.

The right prop material goes a long way with feather changers. It helps add to the taper along with the right size hackle

I’m old school and still tie them. I use the quill from the peacock eye when I tie mine. I also started coating my quill bodies with a light coat of UV resin to beef them up a little bit.

Split wing dry flies are easy if you can find good flank feathers. I was fortunate on this last bunch of flies becuase somoene plucked all the feathers from a few mallards. One of these days im going to tie a few streamers and @nfrechet and I can have a tie off. I will get my *** kicked but it builds the comrodery.
