I have a cheap old rod with rusted guides. I can replace them with no problem. The rod has metal ferrule that is corroded but not to bad. I can clean them up but I have never been able to keep the metal clean enough to be functional, the two ends always seem to rust together. Anyone have any tips to keep that from happening?

The rust together has me wondering if the ferrules are cheap plated steel or brass. When the plating goes it is tough to get the ferrules working properly. Maybe a very light coating of some lubricant with a corrosion inhibitor like BoeShield would help. Chunks of plating coming off will bind up ferrules and when the plating goes it may be time to replace the ferrules (not easy) or retire the rod. Once the base metal is exposed corrosion can undercut the plating.
Also, only connect the rod together when fishing.
At all other times, have the rod taken down.

If the ferules are worn nickel plated steel or brass, they will always rust or corrode and get stuck.
IF the rod is worth it to you, buy a set of nickel silver replacement ferrules.
Thanks for the input guys. It isn't a high price rod. It's an actionrod spinning rod. I have had several two piece rods become one piece when I was a kid. I thought maybe there was something I could do to prevent that. Not a valuable rod but maybe a project for a cold winter

I understand that about costs but check American tackle brass ferrules they are the cheapest ones out there.
