Swarms of mayflies in Wilkes-Barre a good sign for the Susquehanna River

Drivers or pedestrians crossing the Market Street Bridge might not appreciate huge swarms of bugs covering the span and creating a slick surface, but there is a bright side.

This article brought back very fond childhood memoroes for me. As a kid growing up in p
Pittston, I vividly remember crossing the Water Street Bridge in a car as a teen and sliding down the West Pitston side incline on a sheet of mayflies.

That and standing in line at Dairy Queen or Carter's on Wyoming Avenue and observing the mayflies clinging to every vertical surface around me. Wasn't fly fishing in those days but it was just part of growing up on the Susquehanna in the summer.

This made me smile.

I drove down River St in Wilkes Barre as the hatch was going on- it was truly like a living blizzard!

Saturday evening in Tunckhannock was nuts with the white flies. Aside from the blizzard on the river, there was a ton swarming lights and more than a few on the bridge decks. Very cool!

Loved that hatch when we lived in PA. I remember a time fishing the hatch near Bloomsburg when it truly looked like a blizzard. If you didn't keep your mouth shut, you were eating flies.

Lots of mayflies shows that aquatic life is doing well in the river.

I did a YouTube search for "mayflies Wilkes-Barre" and found some videos of huge numbers of white mayflies.

Many of the comments were very negative, referring to the mayflies as a "plague."

Ignorance. It demonstrates the need for public education on the indicators and the value of a healthy environment.
