Dear Board,

Time-10:00 AM to 5:30 PM

Weather - overcast with a tinge of fog to start but by 12:30 PM the sun broke through and remained shining bright and strong

Air Temp - 55F to start and 68F when we finished

Water Temp - Approximately 55F to 57F degrees over the course of the trip. On some of the more expansive flats it may have been a little warmer, but the fish felt good and cold all day.

Wind- virtual none for much of the day but around 2:30 - 3:00 a rather strong upriver wind rose up. Drift control was difficult, but the guide we were with is good on the sticks and he kept us on the fish despite the wind pushing us. He works like an Amish mule all day!

My brother and I fished with a guide today in his drift boat. We put in at the Liverpool Fire Company access and ran upriver under trolling motor power a mile or more above the access. We picked up the occasional smallmouth on the run upriver but until the clouds broke and the sun came out it was one fish here, one fish there. Once the sun came up the fish activity picked up a great deal. All of our fishing was done on the Eastern side of the river with the exception of a few fish we picked up returning the ramp. Fish were caught about equally in sunlight flats and rocky shaded runs.

No large fish were caught but we caught many 12 to 13 inchers and at least a dozen of fish in the 15–16-inch range. We also caught some dinks, but the vast majority of the fish were decent sized and fought well on 7 and 8 weight rods.

Flies - Clouser Minnows in size 4 in Olive and White, Olive and Tan and Olive and Yellow. Size 4 leeches in Olive and Brown, and my brother caught a couple of on brown Slumpbuster. Edited to add: I fished a 30-foot SA Titan slow sinking tip intermediate line, and my brother fished a full slow sinking SA line.

After lunch I slummed it and started fishing Red Metalflake Z-man sinking flukes. They did just as well as the flies, and maybe better.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂
