Sunfish fun day

I injured my already wrecked knee months ago and was only able to go fishing a few times since. I haven’t had a fly rod out at all because I can’t put on or take off waders and walking on uneven surfaces is out of the question. Today I went out to a crowded state park with my 3 weight and a couple boxes of flies in my pocket. I parked and walked 50’ to the creek. I was that guy fishing at the bridge but without ever leaving the road and I could feel some judgmental eyes on me or perhaps I was just paranoid. It was a beautiful day and I ended up staying way longer than I planned. I caught sunnies on a yellow foam spider on almost every cast until losing it. I tried a few other flies without the same success. I settled on a copper/green foil beetle that was next best but nowhere near the yellow spider. The beetle did catch a small LMB as a bonus. All in all it was a great day to be retired.

Well done!
Attaboy for getting on the water and getting after them, especially with your recent challenges!

Now, go tie some more yellow spiders.

Joe

I went sunny fishing last Saturday. Knew it would be pretty empty since they were going to stock trout the following Wednesday. I was right. The sunnies were there. I had fun less the 2 miles from home.

Glad you got out and made the best of the hand you’re currently holding poop. Hope you get some positive resolution on the knee.

Thank you! It’s a fine hand and life is firing on all cylinders for me. It’s gonna take more than a bum knee to change that. Election Day is the day for the new knee and I will most definitely get out to the same spot next week unless I can think of an easier place.

What a difference a day or four make. Went back to the same fishing parking lot, at the same time with the same rod and same box of flies. The air and water temperature was the same, the sun, wind and water current were the same and there were the same number of fishermen (me). I tied more yellow foam spiders that caught sunnies on almost every cast the previous trip. I was ready but the fish didn’t get the memo. They wanted nothing to do with the spider. I jumped around to beetles, ants, bully bluegills, and some no name bright color wets. All I could muster were a handful of the dumbest juvenile sunnies in the creek. On Thursday I stayed later then I anticipated, yesterday I ended my day earlier than expected.

I believe in the Frank Sawyer method of making sure there is some fish slime on your fly for the next cast - the more fish you catch, the more the feeding pheromones get on the bug - I had it happen with a bubble gum foam bug - after the first catch, I couldn’t keep them off of it - works for nymphs too (especially the Killer Bug or Walt’s Worm)
