South Dakota record Pumpkinseed

So no one feels left out:

Sunnie (Bluegill) ID Chart - Copy.jpg

When we were kids catching scores of them in Dove Lake, they were all sunnies to us.

I was out fishing for them at a local creek on Friday morning with a buddy. I probably caught 40 and have no clue what they were...

Which didn't diminish the experience for me one bit. 😉

While not a record, I caught this "sunnie" many moons ago while float tubing a favorite lake "upda line."

Fat Sunny on Yum Dinger.jpg

The "pi$$ed off" fish clobbered a 6" skin hooked Yum Dinger on probably a 4/0 hook that I was using to target largemouth bass.. I'm not sure of its exact length, but it was fat as heck and took a bait that came close to its length...

Sadly, this lake which gave up a minimum of 20 - 30 largemouth bass to me every outing with a few topping in the 4 -5 lb range, changed ownership a while back and has become an overcrowded campground lake complete with "paddle boats" and two zillion folks fishing and generally F'n up the bassin' and sunnie fishin'...

Always sad to hear of a great fishery's decline. 🙁

That's a green sunfish in your picture. They're only native to a very small section of PA. They make great flathead bait, or so I've heard.

A local was using a live sunfish at night to catch this monster. I've posted this before, that it would have been a Pa state record had it been caught in public water.

It would need to be caught in public water to be a state record?

From the PFBC:

Fish must be caught in Pennsylvania waters open to the public without charge, fee, special permission
or membership.
a. Waters open to the public are those waters open without condition, restriction or requirement
set forth by the landowner or lessor.
b. Farm and private ponds, regulated fishing lakes, ponds or stream sections or waters restricted to
use by club members or their guests are not considered open to the public, even if no fee is
charged.
c. On waters which share a boundary with another state, the angler must prove the fish was
hooked and landed in Pennsylvania’s portion of said waterbody.
This means any Allenberry catches do not qualify... 😉

What kind of private water had that huge flathead? A pond?

It's a reservoir owned by Aqua Pennsylvania.
Dear wildtrout2,

Obviously, it is either fed by, or flows into a publicly owned river, since flatheads are a river catfish in their native range. They existed long before dams were even imagined in most of the Southern US including all the TVA and other hydro-electric spawned lakes. I'll admit there is an outside chance that some bucket biologist dropped it in the reservoir, and it grew up, but I doubt that is the case.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Actually, it's fed by a very small creek. This largemouth, which I've posted before, came from that same reservoir. There are a lot of big bass in there. I have a buddy who used to catch them regularly.

Dear wildtrout2,

I stand corrected, sort of. If the flathead couldn't swim up from the Schuylkill, Susquehanna, Alleghany, Ohio or Delaware then obviously some bucket biologist stocked it.

Tim Murphy 🙂

I would have to think that most, if not all, of the various species of fish in this impoundment were stocked at some point. This water used to be open to public fishing years ago.
