Dear Jim,
Here is a PVC tube built out of Schedule 40 2" PVC. As others have noted, PVC is heavy. On the plus side I could confidently beat a charging rhino to death with this rod tube and know the rod would be fine. 😉
There are definitely lighter grades of PVC pipe that would more than adequate for building a storage/carrying rod tube but I wanted to go HD since this my first "good" fly rod that I bought in 1979 from FFP when they were a room in the Post Office in Lemont PA. This rod is still in immaculate condition and that's due in part to the HD rod case.
I wanted to show the tube and the caps, so you get idea of what is involved. Once the PVC is cut to length it takes about all of 5 minutes to glue it all together, and that is if you are lolly-gagging around.
If you want to go this route, I'd suggest you got to your local hardware store or Big-Box store and peruse their selections of pipe and couplers. You could easily build this with 4" PVC in a lighter gauge and maybe even fit all of your rods in it if you have bags and assemble the 4-piece rods into 2-piece rods.
