I have tried that method of tying the post off above the hackle and have found those flies to be more prone to riding on their sides as a result of the extra bulk up high, so keep that in mind if you try it to be very careful of wraps.

What thread are you using. I was tying with 70D ultrathread. Next time I try this I'm gonna try it with a 16/0 veevus or the like.

Go with a synthetic dubbing with some sparkle or flash. Ice dub makes an effective fly but is a pain to use on smaller flies. Sometimes the fibers are just way too coarse. I still haven't found a dubbing I'm entirely happy with for PH's.

FWIW - I have been using Ice Dub for the thorax on my Tricos for years. I've found a really good tacky wax like vintage or the reintroduced Overton's Wonder Wax or BT's Super Tacky Wax are a BIG help.

i still use 6/0 danville for most of my flies

I never fished or tied a purple body fly , two yrs ago when i was in Missoula Mont , I asked my guide what fly he`d use for a searching pattern , he said with out a doubt a purple haze parachute

I use natural kapok or a blend with kapok and color the belly with a purple marker while listening to Jimmy Hendrix.
