New: enhanced/navigable pa public fishing map

I have some off this week to explore, and I wanted a map that would help me determine three things: where I can fish, where I can park, and where I can walk. For my usage Google maps was annoying and onx is mehhh, so I spent some time last week with arcgis finding data sources and filtering out everything I considered extraneous, annoying or useless (including anything with 0% public access). This map does most of what I wanted pretty well, and as it pulls information directly from government sources, no updates should be necessary🤞.

ArcGIS

When opened the map displays the following:

• All publicly accessible trout streams: class A, stocked and natural repro
• All special regulation streams for all fish types
• All PFBC registered lakes
• All stream gauges with flow information. If viewed in browser water temperature is shown where available

Zoom in and the following additional items become visible:

• Boundaries for all publicly accessible public and private land in a spectrum of wacky colors.
• All publicly accessible parking locations and boat launches as well as all walking and motorized trails recorded by the state

Click on anything and you get popup info. In addition, if you use the free arcgis Field Maps app, you can click on anything and get driving directions through Apple Maps, google or Waze (and maybe others). No CarPlay sorry.

Adding your own points is a bit funky. Try that if you want or use it as is. No support offered.

I like it. Having the USGS water data links is really nice. Thanks for sharing.

There are a couple of things I would note. There's definitely a lot of parking access missing so don't necessarily let that limit exploring a stream. Also, some of the shaded areas that are private but open to the public don't allow fishing. I'm sure it isn't many but it's worth looking up regulations ahead of time if you are travelling somewhere.

Yes there are many, many parking locations not listed: included are only those posted by the state. Onx shows others and there are many more.

I filtered out all public and private but inaccessible land, as well as all streams with no public access. In cases where publicly accessible land (public or private) has restricted or non-public streams - e.g. there are private but publicly accessible conserved land areas with streams that are closed to fishing, like the Class A in Bear Creek Preserve - such streams were also filtered (though one could restore them if one so chooses).

I think the map is good starting place as it pulls data exclusively from authoritative sources, but it’s always prudent to double check.

I didn’t take it as a critique, and apologize if my tone suggested that. That said, criticism and suggestions are welcome (just don’t expect support, lol).

Btw, I added the PAFF Jamboree location to the map.

Thanks for this map! I like the PAFBC map, but this one is also very nice. I'm always perusing maps for yearly fishing trips with my dad (going to be staying in the Moshannon SF in a couple of weeks and fishing for the weekend) so it's good to be able to see both the public land and the larger pieces of accessible private land as well.

It’s set so you don’t need an arcgis account, just the app. Then tap any item and go. I also added all of the tributaries that feed the natural reproduction streams - with a note that those may be private or restricted - and I think these are probably the last major tweaks this thing will be getting.

If you wouldn’t mind testing that out to make sure the navigation works I’d appreciate it. It’s flawless for me, but I can’t be sure it’s cool until at least a few someones give it a try. Thx!

yes, tried the first link does not work on my desktop, not sure maybe its an issue on my end but that same link works on the phone browser
to clarify it opens argis website and then when I click open in map viewer it would not load the map

All named natural repro and stocked streams now display labels at roughly 10-20 mile view. Not perfect, but definitely more usable. PAFF Spring Jam area shown.
