I haven't been able to fish since Aug 6 as i was instructed to do nothing for 4-6 weeks. It's really hard to do nothing. I tied a lot of flies, watched my new little ring neck snakes i found on my porch and pretty much just watched the days go by. One of the flies i tied was Kelly Galloup's found link after seeing another PAFF member post one in the fly tying thread. I started fishing this morning with a Michigan Fry streamer. It got a rainbow in the first run i tried and then i missed another just a bit downstream. Since i hadn't been able to fish, just wet wading in the stream and throwing a line was enough for me. Fish caught were a bonus. I fished a while with the streamer and missed another strike before getting to a pool i knew usually had fish at the head. I switched to an Ausable Wulff and got smashed on the first drift through. I missed it and could not get any other interest so i switched to the found link. Several fish decided they liked it and i got another rainbow and a brown and had a couple others on that i didn't land.
I had taken this trip with the purpose of dedicating my fish to a good buddy that passed away early yesterday morning. He had been battling for years and his passing wasn't unexpected, but losing friends, fishing friends especially is tough no matter what. There's very few people that not a soul has anything bad to say about, but my buddy Ken was one. He was an awesome fisherman, fly tyer and just a gentle soul. No fishing trip was complete without a phone call on the way home. No phone call today.
We both shared a mutual friend (my best friend) from years ago, another awesome fisherman/fly tyer who has been gone for over 24 years. He also was a Ken. I always would "speak" with Ken when i fished and took him on all my trips. Looks like I'm taking two Ken's with me now. RIP Ken.
