Is 95L luggage overkill?

Was looking at new rolling duffel for travel. I’ve never flown with fishing gear. What size(s) does everyone use. I was thinking 55-60L would be plenty. Found a good deal on a 95L. Is that waaaay more than I need? I’m a very light packer and my rods/reels will be in carry on. Appreciate your help/advice/time as always…

Will be for clothing/toiletries, chest pack, extra fly boxes, boots, waders (will roll up very small), maybe a 2nd pair of shoes

I doubt 95L will be too large and may be on the small size. A duffle with the dimensions of 25" x16" x 16" is 105L. If you wear large sized wading boots and are taking chest waders those items alone will take up considerable space.

I have an older LL Bean duffle bag that is about 40" x 18" x18" that is probably about 210L capacity. If I go away for a week it's stuffed to the gills and difficult to carry with just handles and a shoulder strap. You'll definitely learn to appreciate anything with a roller carriage.

62” linear inches and 50lbs is generally the max on bag limits. Linear inches is length plus width plus depth. If your over you are subject to increased bag charges and possible refusal to load. Bigger is not always better.

The max luggage dimensions are MORE than adequate for any fishing trip. The linear inch requirement is nothing more than a simplified way of measuring volume. The 95L mentioned earlier in the thread is far less than the volume you can potentially achieve with a suitcase meating the 62" limit.

Virtually all luggage will fit under the typical airline requirements and this is again an area where if you don't bring attention to it, they won't care. The people at check in are only concerned about weight. Unless something is grossly oversized or a very unusual shape, they are not going to slow down the line to haggle over a few square inches.

50lbs is a ton of gear and truly a bit of a challenge to reach if you also take carry on. On a recent trip I got a suitcase filled up to 50.5lbs. That included two (wet) pairs of boots, waders, rain gear, loaded sling pack, net, extra warm clothes, an unhealthy amount of fly boxes, extra reels and God knows what else.

I actually used maybe a third of what I brought. Would I bring that much crap with me again? Yes.

Never underestimate the power of axwoman to pack. 😜 or my days when he visits from Idaho for over 2 weeks at a time in winter. But I've watched people get told their bags are 70 lbs and have the nerve to look shocked.
