Another eBay purchase - a little elbow grease with a Q-tip and isopropyl to remove the oxidized grease on all the moving parts, flip the drag ring and line guard for left hand retrieve, a tiny drop of mineral oil in the clicker spring assemblies (both spools too), rewind the backing and clean fly line on the filled spool, and a final lube with synthetic grease, and wipe down with an old silicon gun rag - a serviceable old war horse made in USA (except for the Shakespeare extra spool) for less than $60 - now to fill the empty spool with some backing and a DT6F line and install it on an uplocking seated Fenwick FF856 - battle ready! Can you say “balanced rig”? - Sure, I knew you could …

Its called the "Bulldog Method" and works great. You should be able to find instructions out on the web. If you detailed instructions, send me a PM.

I was cleaning up shelves in the garage and found a 1495 DA Pflueger that I bought 20 years ago and thought I lost. It was like buying for free from eBay!

They are so easy to clean-up and make serviceable again.

Yup - my first rod was a 7 1/2 footer too - paired with a Pflueger Sal-Trout - I still have it and fish with it frequently! I’m a sucker for Fenwick/Pflueger combos

Personally I am not a fan of the down locking reel seat on this particular rod,it comes loose all the time,I think it's the way I hold it ,but still not a fan

I have a vintage 70's 2pc Fenwick FS55 UL spinning rod. It has the slip rings, which surprisingly never come loose. Even though I rarely fish it, I'd never part with it.

A 1st generation 7'6" 5wt Fenwick HMG was my 2nd fly rod, purchased new at a local sporting goods store. Graphite was SUCH a big deal at the time and I was the envy of my fishing buddy because I pulled the trigger.

I sold the rod to another freind who fished it to death. literally...

BTW - I sent you a PM on the reel cleaning method a little while ago.

boeshield t9 is the best thing i've ever used for cleaning old reels. i remember ron's method, and frankly, the boeshield is easier than the vinegar bath and red sauce.

as for fenwicks, the ff756 is one of two rods i own a exact duplicate of. i've tried many times to replace it and i have yet to do better.

everyone loves the 806, but i think the 756 is superior.

but thjat's jsut me.

Ron prefers Boeshield as a first step too, and only uses the vinegar bath when a Boeshield cleaning doesn't work.

Quantum Red Sauce is still his and many others preferred lubricant.
