Just kidding. Wonder what the guys with a 100 rods... what their reel numbers look like.

My fishing stuff is in such disarray I couildn't even tell you. One day I have to go through that cabinet but it was bad for a long time. I finally stopped myself from typing "Medalist" on ebay because I became obsessed with "well, that's a good deal!" for things I never needed and then letting in my need to win kick in.

And I think reels are somehow easier to collect. I bet you'll find the guys who do that with a cabinet full of some particular type of thing over and over again. Medalists, Hardys, or unnamed S-handle reels, etc. They look good, are easy to display, and shine up real nice in a way that benefits clean. unmolested models as well as worn ones with "patina," as well.

So, 13 total. Down from my all time high of around 23 from two years ago.

I have 15 because I developed a habit of buying vintage glass rods when they’re cheap. I call them “rentals” because they could easily be resold, but I don’t want to sell any lol. Latest is this Silaflex 8.5’ 7wt, clearly never used, still in original plastic wrap. The old Silaflex rods are beautiful, but for $70 it’s not so dear that it won’t be used.

After they get a good run and I settle on my favorites I may release a bunch back into the wild. Maybe. 🤔

I had just 2 fly rods for a long time. I now have 9 of them if you count an Eagle Claw pack combo rod. In the last 3 years since joining PAFF I have acquired about half of them due to the Swap Forum. I look on there way too much.
I try to use each rod at least once each season. I wouldn’t part with any of them.

A Browning Silaflex was my high school graduation gift.

My parents bought me my very first fly rod for Christmas back in the 70's. It's a Browning Silaflex (32280) 2pc 8' 6wt. Only fished it a few times, but I still have it in it's original tube and sock.

I now have both Fenwick and Silaflex 5 and 6 weights in 6’, 7’, 7.5’, 8’ and 8.5’. Most were from eBay and cost under $100, all were either barely used or unused, all are very nice, and none are for sale. If I decide to start culling, the first to go will be my one Orvis glass - SFG 7.5’ 4wt 3pc - because to me it feels like a vintage 5wt but doesn’t seem better. Nice, but not nicer.

Just donated 11 flyrods to Project Healing Waters along with a bunch of fly tying materials, packs, flies,etc. I still have to many rods and to much stuff.

Similar to guns and bows I used to have way too many and have now gotten it down to just what I truly use so Ive got a 10' 2wt euro rod, an 8'6" 4wt and a 7' 3wt for brookie adventures. I would like a backup for each though lol

I have a stupid amount of fly reels which includes a bunch that I bought new at low prices and never took out of the box.

I also have a few out of rotation vintage reels, in rotation vintage reels and spinning & casting reels both new(er) and vintage that I use or just admire.

It's a disease...

In regards to spare spools...

I did it with my first two reels when I was under the misapprehension that I needed sink tip lines for the kind of fishing I planned on doing.

I never went down that rabbit hole again (which may explain why I have so many reels) except in the case of an inexpensive Cabela's Drake reel I bought as back-up with two spare spools because it was on sale & I had Cabela's points.

I have this reel set-up with 6wt, 7wt & 8wt floating lines for warmwater fishing and it lives in a gear bag I have set up for warmwater fly fishing. With the exception of one 8'6" rod, all of the other rods I use with the Drake are 9'0" graphite so the balance is pretty much the same.

Even though I also own other fancier (read more expensive) reels lined up with 6wt, 7wt & 8wt floating lines that I specifically purchased for these rods & warmwater fishing; if I had it to do all over again for warmwater, I think a Drake (or reasonable facsimile) and couple of spare spools would be the way I'd go.

I had the Drake out the other day on a local creek targeting panfish & bass on poppers and I forgot how nice these reels and similar were/are for the money.
