I am embarrassed to admit that I have over 60 rods. I have used 22 of them this year.

I suspect the bulk of people who've got two dozen or more (Tim, myself, Shortrod, I'm sure others I'm not looking back for) are all sort of the same: We received them from someone along the way, or maybe bought "junk" rods when they weren't called "vintage glass" or "blue collar bamboo."

And I'm willing to bet most of the people in that category have a couple they use reliably, and a couple we try to use for "reasons." Shortrod might be the exception with 22 in one season... Shortrod, you might have a problem. 🙂

At this stage, I have a couple I go to reliably, a couple of niche rods that I goto when I need that purpose and a whole lot of weird things, experiments, or acquired through odd ways and never really use.

edit: I went back to look despite saying I wouldn't. Lestrout is, of course, the exception being a collector. I don't doubt your "hundreds" and I'm willing to bet 90% of them are classier than anything I've ever touched. You and Shortrod can probably start a support group.

I do make a point to try to use all of the rods. I would be even more embarrassed if I had these rods and never fished them. My biggest problem along these lines is that it has been a long time since I have fished all of the rods I owned in one season.

I just have 4.

10’ 3wt nymphing rod
9’ 5wt
7’6” 6wt
9’ 7wt for big streamers

When I can afford it, I’d like to get a 10’6” or 11” 2wt for normal nymphing applications and then a 10’-10’6” 4wt for jig streamers and nymphing for larger fish. The 3wt does everything ok for me but it leaves a lot to be desired for both streamers and nymphs. It doesn’t do anything perfectly I guess. Not a ton of tippet protection and you can forget about it if you happen to hook a huge fish in a smaller stream in tight cover even with decently strong tippet. It just feels like the rod will snap before the tippet sometimes and I don’t like having to push it to the limit every single time Im in such a situation. And I guess a 7-8ft 3wt as well. The 7’6” 6wt is good on spring creeks and can drag fish out of the weeds but it’s no fun on a brookie stream

In no order of importance or usage. 10 ft 7 wt orvis Clearwater. 9 ft 6 wt orvis Clearwater. 8.5 ft 6 wt superfine. 7 ft 5 ft silver label. 9 ft 8-9 wt St Croix. 8 ft 7 wt Diawa. 8 ft 5 wt Sage. 7 ft 6 wt Fenwick. 7 ft 3 wt Eagle claw. 10 ft 3 wt Cabela's this rod gets used the most

About 25 rods accumulated over 50 years. Saltwater 7 to 11wt, freshwater 3 to 6wt including 3 fiberglass and one cane rod. One spey rod.

Same here. I've been slowly downsizing my stash of rods. Some sold. Some sold cheap to friends and some given away or donated to PHW.
But then I recently purchased a 10wt that I really don't need. So.....

No. I am not counting reels. I used to enjoy buying old Medalists or weird junk. I have entirely too many reels that I have never used or will never use again.

When I'm dead, my kids are gonna have a lot of crap to sort through most of which I'm sure will be put on ebay in bulk so they can buy new Jordans or whatever. I'm OK with it.
