Fly tying pet peeve…

I saved about 50 issues of the Mid Atlantic Fishing Guide. I miss that publication that was issued free at fly shops.

We used to refer to that as the "Freebee."

I have the old "Index of Orvis Fly Patterns" by John Harder that was a tier's bible back in the day. I also have a ton of Chauncey Lively patters that were published in each issue of the PA Angler magazine. I cut them out, put them in sheet protectors and a ring binder and I still have them today.

A more recent source of patterns was Fly Tyer magazine until it became less fly patterns and more destination/technique stuff so I dropped my subscription.

I’ve been tying flies long enough that I usually just need the recipe. It irks me when the video presenter gives basic fly tying instructions. Get to it, dude!
I don’t bother trying to imitate other patterns very often - I do try to create my own - some look a little like other patterns - some work well all the time - some work well part of the time - some work some of the time - and some don’t work at all

My subscription to Fly Tyer expired and they never contacted me to subscribe so I didnt.
You are not missing much. I still subscribe to it; but, it has gone down hill drastically. A few issues back there were flies featured that looked like they were tied by someone who never tied before.

i view the magazine at the bookstore and only buy it if its really interesting otherwise it stays on the shelf

My pet peeve is having a ton of fly tying material. Then ordering some more materiel for that particular pattern. Then later on finding that same material in your supply,. now having duplicate or triplicates

i have the same affliction

The last time I got a Fly Tyer magazine I was at the Evening Hatch fly shop by Lake Harmony in the Poconos before it became Precision. I bought about 85.00 work of stuff like hen necks etc. The owner gave me two recent back issues for free.

Not buying fly tying materials that you already have can be a bad idea depending on timing...

At the very beginning of the feather-in-the-hair craze, I was snapping up as many Whiting 100 packs in the sizes I used as I could find, anywhere I could find them at well under $10 pack... 😎

My current fly material stockpiling addictions: FlyRite Extra Fine Poly and good lemon wood duck flank. I consider both as becoming harder to find as time goes on.

My fly tying pet peeve might be not being able to put my hands on my whip finishener at the end of a fly even though I know exactly where I put it and what materials I stacked on top of it during the tie.

Keeping my desk clear of only the materials required for the fly I am tying solved that problem for me...

I also bought a TON of Gudebrod tying thread directly from them right after they declared bankruptcy...

Tying peeves? I'd say "tyer's block." Sometimes I can't decide what to tie. Or by the time I have decided, I'm no longer in the mood.

Another peeve: Interruptions. I used to tie late at night or well before daybreak for this reason.

I don't recall either being a peeve long ago. Maybe it's just a phase of getting older.

I still prefer Fly-Rite. I think it may have been "the" synthetic dry fly dubbing when I started. The last packages I got were from Hook & Hackle, but it appears there's still supply around.

I received an assortment of Gudebrod spools in trade from a fellow in PA. That was near 20 yrs ago. I recall his name was Nick. Perhaps he's been a member here. It didn't take me any time to understand why he liked the thread so much.
