Interesting numbers. Source for not listed, but numbers appear to be believable, by me anyway. FFing participation is definitely on the upswing in the last decade.

Agree with what they see across the country and a nice find @afishinado . I do recall at PFBC study done in the late 1990's that came back with results of about 10% of PA license holders identified as fly fisherman. So that was the height of the license sales in PA and was at about one million. So even with a decrease of anglers (~650,000 now) and increase in fly fishing persons, that still puts the number in PA likely under 100,000. So the number here really hasn't changed or maybe even has gone down. Hard to really know specifically here until a new survey is completed.

A lot of other factors at play too.. Number of days fishing or outings, has that changed in PA? Age of anglers that identify with fly fishing?

Good stuff. Thanks

I wonder how that looks when age and gender are taken into considration?

In the 90's and early 2000's the anglers FFing seemed to be mostly middle-aged and seniors.

Today there are a whole lot more younger anglers on the water (and posting on the interweb).

Interweb you say? I don't do them new fangled things.

Do those numbers include Euro nymphing, Tenkara and fishing with Squirmy Wormies?

They surely CAN'T be considered fly fishing... 😉

There are still a lot of seniors flyfishing.

But they are different seniors then were fly fishing in the 1970s.

A day of fishing and no work is good enough for me.

The more the merrier

I didnt see anyone else today fishing in a state park. Just some rv campers

If you were a senior in the 70s you sure aren’t fishing now. RIP

I think those numbers are probably accurate. Definitely a big Covid jump, as was the case with a lot of outdoor sports.

While I think that, all things considered, there is less angling pressure in PA than the 80s/90s, I do think that FFing has sustained or grown. Saltwater FFing really seems to me to have risen dramatically.

I'm just basing this off my own impressions.

I just told my wife avg annual outings were 11, how did I do? I just got the look…😉
If I only fished 11 times in a year, my wife would think I was either ill or depressed. My wife was “well-trained” BEFORE we married.
