I'm going to be driving from Ohio to New England next week and staying for a night in Matamoras. Is it worth taking a rod and fishing for smallmouth in the Delaware near Matamoras? I would be fishing from the bank or maybe wading if it is safe. Thanks for any advice.

I fished for an hour or two in the late afternoon in the PFBC boat ramp area on the way home from a meeting once. I caught SMB, but all were small. That was a lousy time of day to fish, so don’t go by my catch. I would guess that there are larger ones to be caught plus walleye.

By the Rt 84 bridge by Tri State Rock (on NY side)where the Neversink enters the Delaware River is a popular place to shore fish. SMB, walleye, chunky panfish and good size trout that filter down from the Neversink in the colder months but may hold over in spring holes in summer.

Good fishing all through that area, although most smallies on smaller side around 10" to 12". They all pull hard though. On NY side good access at Sparrow Bush NY DEC launch (a favorite of mine) and mouth of Mongaup R. ON PA side look for Matamoras access. PA license good from either side of river.

I commonly float that section renting a kayak from Kittattiny Canoes. Matamoras to River Beach is a nice 6 mile trip allowing plenty of time to fish. Did it a little over a week ago and got dozens of the normal ones and 4 15"+ ones.
