Dear poopdeck,

Thanks for affirming my guess as to the contractor. According to Flyway Excavating's website they have removed about 1/4 of all the dams removed in Pennsylvania. I hope it's OK to copy something from their website and post it here.

You'll get a kick out of this story, since you often post about fishing down da shore. In late the 1980's I worked selling heavy equipment for a dealer in Ephrata. The owner of the company was a devout offshore saltwater fisherman. He told my boss and I that he spent a huge amount of money, $ 70.000, to repower his sportfisherman boat with diesels instead of the gas 454 Chevies it had early in the Spring. He went every week the weather was favorable and fished hard. We talked again later in the year, and he said the savings in fuel had paid for over half the expense of the diesels in one season. But that was a long time ago when diesel was 69 cents a gallon and boat gas was over a buck. The diesels used 1/4 of the fuel of the gas jobs.

Diesel is a sore subject with me right now. Yesterday I filled my tank at $6.59 a gallon. Almost $220.00. I’m gonna have to start filling up at 3/4 full so I can trick myself.

Back then I worked for Groff Tractor at their Ephrata branch in the late 1980's.

You ain't telling me nothing I don't know about the cost of diesel fuel. I bought a 2000 Dodge 2500 4WD with a Cummins brand new. It came with a full tank back in those days, and since I got it on a Friday and diesel was 79 cents a gallon, I drove it all over hill and dale to check it out. The 20 mpg was impressive.

I went to fill it up the next weekend and due to a crisis somewhere in the world diesel was now $ 2.39 a gallon. It cost me $ 78.00 to fill it them. But not long after things got back to normal plus 20 cents and I almost never had to pay more than 99 cents a gallon for the first 150K I put on the truck. But by 2009 diesel was pushing $ 4.00 a gallon and I bought a used car to drive daily and paid for it with the savings in fuel costs quickly. It got too expensive to justify as a weekend vehicle and it went away in 2010.

I miss my Cummins! 🙁

Gas is always 30 bucks unless I have a trip to go on.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an explosive breaching on this one. I watched the dam on the Elwha come down and they breached with explosives. I'm starting to think it was for show.
