Youghiogheny River - Somerset/Fayette 15Jul2026

Fished yesterday and was sorely disappointed with the insect life. Normally there is something hatching this time of year, be it olives, sulphurs, cahills, caddis, or terrestrials. Saw nothing but a few caddis yesterday. Very few fish rising (not surprising given nothing to rise to), maybe one rise every 10 minutes in sight. This makes probably 3 times this summer I've been disappointed. Has there been some event that has systematically reduced the hatches there? Let me know your experience.
i thought the last two summers sulphurs were weak.. may, this year was good to me on the river but june i thought i only had a ~handful or less days were the yellow's were getting smoked and fish were consistently eating… i spend a lot of days there too so i’m set to up see more than ones who aren’t fishing it as much of course

Haven't been there in the early AM, maybe 9:30-10. I've sometimes stayed till dark, and usually things will pick up a bit with rusty spinners or something. Maybe my memory is fading a bit, but I remember at least a smattering of fish rising pretty near any time of day.

no you are absolutely right.. i went out that saturday though and there were fish up and eating just not like what we’d both wanna see.. i had to move to find them throughout the day i started around 9

I got skunked the last two times that I fished the Yough. I need a confidence builder, did you see what brand of corn he was using.😊
I got some of my confidence back yesterday. I had a heavy fish seperate my dry fly from my tippet right out of the gate. I waded across the river where I spotted a couple of risers and caught a couple 13ish browns on a BWO. Saw some tails so I tied a pheasant tail under a Elk hair caddis , no luck. At about 11 O'clock I went back to the spot where I lost the first fish and lo and behold she took the pheasant tail.
