Yellow Breeches, Cumberland Co., 6/18/2011

Fished yb on saturday with my dad for father's day. Water seemed slightly above normal flow, but was still very clear. Didn't see much insect activity all day. Fished upstream of the special reg water in the morning in a park (forget the name of the park, the one with the mill). Water temp was 60-61 there. Caught 11 total in the morning. All but 1 was a small, beautifully colored, wild brown like the one in the picture. Caught 10 of them on a size 20 black zebra midge and 1 on the stimulator i had as the dry in the dry dropper set up. We at hoagies on the tailgate of the truck and went down to the special reg section in Boiling Springs. Barely saw a fish in the run. Water temp in the main stream was 67. Caught another 5 stockers, 1 brookie, 3 browns, and a bow in maybe 2 hrs of fishing. 4 of them took the zebra midge and 1 took a chartuese woven nymph. Just before leaving i was wading in to fish a nice run and i spotted a carp feeding in the shallow water before the deep run. Chucked my nymph at him, twitched it, he moved over, i saw his lips moving right where my nymph should be, set the hook, and he took off! Unfortunately my 4wt with 5x wasn't the best setup and he broke off on the initial run. Left at 5pm to go back to my parent's place for a father's day BBQ. They live on a cabin right on the banks of the sus q, so i picked up the 6wt, put a heavily weighted but small crayfish pattern on under an indie, and picked up 2 15-17inch channel cats in 15-20 minutes while my dad was cooking. The river in marietta is still a little high and off color, but very fishable, at least from a boat, probably not condusive to wading very far. Happy Father's day!

A black zebra midge size 20 was the ticket for me today too...fished for a few hours right by Allenberry and had around 20 to hand and just as many if not more throw the hook. The takes were very subtle and I wouldn't have noticed them if I wasn't using an indicator. This was my first time back to the Breeches in a long time and it was quite the welcome back!

I hate to be a kill joy but I wish you would have not posted the specifics of that section of Yellow Breeches. You can bet the next time you fish at that location none of the fish you caught will be there. Its ATW but why post a road map?

I'm not sure just how much I agree with that, but that stream does take more harvest than any other stream I know. Theres a reason all but one of those wilds were small.
Year round truck chasers.

"Its ATW but why post a road map?" -so other people can go fish there and hopefully have an enjoyable experience. I thought that's what the stream reports section was about. The spot didn't seem like much of a secret, we saw 3x as many fisherman in that section as we did in the special reg area. If someone wants to keep the trout i caught there they're going to have to break the law, because 90% of the wild fish i caught were under 7 inches.

@icey, I tend to ignore any spot burner lectures on here or any other forum where there is a reports section. If reports on a stream reports section rile someone up, they best just not read them. They are what they are. BTW the YB can't be spot burned, it's like burning burnt toast. Thanks for the report on the YB....I never fish there 🙂

That stream is no secret, and nothing our correspondent told us is a surprise or somehting that will endanger a pristine, undisturbed and obscure waterway. I like the specificity of the report and encourage it.

Now, a secret brookie stream that one teenage worm fisherman could clean out in an afternoon? There you keep your mouth shut.

So I'm probably gonna hit the Breeches again on Sunday to teach a buddy to fly fish...are the zebra midges still the ticket or is there something else hatching that I should throw???

depends where & when you're fishing...way upstream from Boiling Springs there have been big yellow drakes on the water and lingering sulphurs in the evenings. Also some caddis fluttering about, terrestrials are always a good bet thru the daytime.

Good point Paul. Like another 25 fisherman would be noticed. Why have a report section with no reports. I always like the report I caught an unidentified number of trout with a undisclosed fly on a secret I can't name stream. Thanks for the report on the breeches. I be there in the morning!!! Just kidding

what's even worse are the guys that come in here and post false information to try to keep people away from what they think is their very own private water. Just read the thread on the Tulpehocken, it's full of a lot of B.S.

I took my buddy who had never fly fished out today and tried to teach him how to fly fish...I spent a couple hours with my rod tucked under my arm watching him cast and giving him pointers...he did pretty well considering it was his first time throwing a fly. No fish to hand but he did have one hit a caddis dry downstream of him as he gathered his line in front of him...

When he was 'done' for the day and ready to leave I decided to fish on the short way back upstream as we were leaving. Brought in one nice brown on a size 18 pheasant tail dropper in the 5 minutes I fished. The water was a touch high and stained from the storms that rolled through earlier in the day...wish I could have spent more time deciphering what the fish wanted, but that's my report...

Hope I didn't 'spot burn' the Breeches...er, I mean 'a random, medium-sized stream in South Central PA'...

Great, broadcast your fishing hole for the world to read. Have fun with every bucketeer fishing in your boot , the likes of which that just wants to use those trout for fertilizer in their garden. I have a whole list of streams that I can publicize that many may not be happy to see posted here. Maybe I should start giving GPS coordinates?

My God. Private water on the Tully. Please tell me which thread and what alleged false reports you are citing.

For stream reports, the more detailed the better. Otherwise, why bother? Everyone with less than 20 years on the water appreciates every word.
