Would you have turned Around?

Just play tag. I haven’t been able to touch a bear yet. I try on every one*. Probably over 200 encounters at this point in my life. I run straight towards them as fast as I can and say “come here bear, let me pet you!” In northern Pa this is the traditional accepted technique, been that way for about 150 years around here. Still works like a charm. Mimic a driver pissed he isn’t on watch and you will be fine!

*This doesn’t apply to Mother with cubs or bears in New Jersey/near Philly.

Come on Philly bears are very chill , this guy lives on city line and has only ever asked me if I have a extra dollar and if he could get a lift to Kelly drive 🙂

Open carry. Make it visible.329 pd. Wear a weird bug net over your face. And camo. No one will mess with you.

Go fishing in yoga pants, carry around a yoga mat and tell any bear you see you want to snuggle...

This seems to terrify most baby goats and puppies in my neck of the woods and it sort of shakes me up and I'm not into yoga...

If I live to Christmas, I'll be 77 years old. To the original post: I would have left. Maybe that's how I got to me so old.

As for carrying: I carry in one location where a pit bull left his property and came at me one morning, and his owner had a hard time stopping him and getting him under control. I carry there now, though I am thankful I haven't seen the pit bull since the morning he came at me. But, you never know.

(There's another place where a landowner friend of mine told me a pit bull sometimes gets off his chain and has attacked some of my friend's animals, especially his sheep. Where this is, I couldn't get a gun ready in time if the dog came down from his property quietly. I have given up fishing that nice hour-and-a-half fishing stretch.)

I’d rather be Burt Reynolds. Or Jon Voight than Ned Beatty
Open carry is good. Everyone sees it.
And honestly if someone drives by on a small stream and sees my outfit and the open carry gun, they are likely not fishing anywhere close to me. Opens the stream up.

I think I would have waited where I was until the possible threat decided to just abandon the plan and move on, or had capitulated and became a rational human and talked to you about trading places.

Till they don't...
What if you just happen to have a glazed donut in your pocket and you're alone.
Actually, years ago l saw a bear that had chased a family out of their campsite at Hickory Run because he wanted what they were having for breakfast. I watched a ranger try to persuade the bear to leave but the bear wasn't buying it. After a few attempts by the ranger the bear stood up on it's hind legs and decided it was going to fight for the goodies. The ranger jumped in his vehicle and l guess he was going for reinforcements. Don't know what happened after that.

Oh, hell. In my case, it'd be a snack while waiting on Dumblefritz Inc. to make up their mind.

How'd bears get involved ?

Or, it could be the last one in the entire state. 😉

Not quite:

(I love the part about getting an app for your smart phone to find a pay phone)

I used one of two payphones in Pettecote Junction Campground in Cedar Run for years to check in with the wife during fishing trips because cell service can be nonexistent up that way.

As a former NYC resident with a pager on my belt back in the 1980's, banks of pay phones were essential and probably prevented about 200 fender benders every day.

I was particularly fond of the kind you could find at some gas stations or highway interchanges with REALLY long armored handset cords so you could talk from your car.

Then there were all of the hundreds of FREE local & long distance phone calls I made at payphones using some kind of trickery... 😉
