What Are You Tying Today?

I'm really interested into getting started with spinning deer hair, and I have a few questions about how to get started, if you're willing:

- What tools would you recommend (both essential and quality of life)?
- What types of hair are best to learn on (animal, brand)?
- What patterns should I start with?
- Are there any materials/books/videos that do a particularly good job of explaining the techniques?
First a really good vacuum cleaner...😛

Look up a guy on U tube, Ed Lash
Ps22 Bass Bugs. He has a 5 part series that explains everything needed to stack hair, tools and materials. You can also search Mike George and Pat Cohen.
Ed Lash is excellent

When you say spinning deer hair do you mean just generally like a basic streamer head - or are you talking about the bass bugs like fly guy has been posting? Because there is a big difference - almost like 2 totally separate things - to me at least. Your basic deer hair stuff isn’t too hard. Get some good quality deer body hair and check out some YouTube videos - Kelly galloups are good although looong. You can get good results pretty quick.

Bass bugs are a whole different animal. You need deer belly hair - quality matters because if its short it makes it even harder. You need GSP thread. And a hair packer. That would be bare minimum stuff. And razor blades. Prepare to put in many hours and to swear a lot. It is fun but can be very frustrating. I’m a fan of fly tying books - Pat Cohen’s book is the one if you want to get into this.

Josh Varner deer hair is by far the best of any I have ever found - both body and belly. And the colors are great.
