The wings on adult caddisflies are tent shaped and lay back over the abdomen. They are usually a bit longer than the abdomen of the caddisfly, in reference to tying - to the bend of the hook or just a bit past the bend.Thanks. I'm going to tie several for my May trip to PA.
I will definitely pay closer attention to the wing length on the next.
Just to the back of the hook correct?
Besides the wing your body is way too long. Shouldn’t extend past the hook point and maybe even a little shorter than that. Keep tying. You’ll get better the more you work at it.

Are you using a hair stacker? If so, you need to tap it more than you are to get the deer hair tips to align. If not, get one. Wing is still a little long but improving. Body in top fly is good. I think you are making your dubbing noodle too thick. Use less dubbing and it will adhere better to your thread. With the suggestions i received yesterday on my first caddis tying attempt I did 2 more this evening. I focused on body length and wing length. How does the proportion look on these 2?

Also after using the hair stacker you should brush or comb out the under fur from the deer or elk hair. Are you using a hair stacker? I suggest doing this before stacking because the underfur can inhibit good stacking. Also after using the hair stacker you should brush or comb out the under fur from the deer or elk hair.
I think the idea is to represent an insect that tried but did not quite emerge from the nymphal/pupal shuck.Isnt a paranymph or floating nymph just a parachute type dry fly with a nymph color body? It probably should not have a shuck if it represents a nymph. Seems just different names for the same thing.
That’s a nice tie. Definitely have made a ton of progress.Ok, Caddis fly take 4!

Thank you. Got a stacker and tried combing out the hair first. That’s a nice tie. Definitely have made a ton of progress.
I actually like to pinch the tips of the hair in one hand and pull out all the shorter hair and under hair before I ever put it in the stacker. Not crucial but I found it makes it easier to stack. Also after using the hair stacker you should brush or comb out the under fur from the deer or elk hair.
