The Late 80's

Ribbing - Gold oval tinsel
Body: Fluorescent green floss
Throat - Red hackle fiber
Wing - Natural mallard flank
Collar - Grizzly hackle

Author's Note

In homage to the neon fashion of the late 1980s, here is a small fly that allowed me to catch several rainbows at the St-Alexis-des-Monts trout festival as well as some speckled trout in the Mastigouche wildlife reserve.

Sometimes I just pull out a particular piece of fly tying material and brainstorm a bit and devise my own pattern out of it. This one material pattern is my mink nymph tied 100% out of a piece of mink fur that I purchased from @mt_flyfisher a little while back. I’m thinking I could rework this into a solid carp fly as well. Thanks, John!

Two bead mohair nymph:
  • 1.5mm black tungsten bead
  • 2.2mm 11/0 Toho cream glass bead
  • dark brown mohair yarn, brushed
  • 50d dark green Lion River gsp
  • Size 20 Eupheng 9240 wide gap jig hook

Sometimes when wrapping some of the mohair pulls off the yarn, so I tie that back in as a wing. In gray, also size 20.

Try Krazy Glue before you start to wrap the PT fibers

Yeah, the wing is a bit long. Focus on dialing that in on your next one. The deer hair looks like good quality stuff for tying caddis wings. I love the black tips on it, I just think those tips make deer hair look legit. Keep after it, you’re doing great!

Thanks. I'm going to tie several for my May trip to PA.
I will definitely pay closer attention to the wing length on the next.
Just to the back of the hook correct?

Body - green chenille
Rib - Oval gold tinsel
Throat - Blue hackle fibers
Wing - Gray squirrel dyed green, one golden pheasant crest feather

Author's Note

The Unknown is a creation of Mr. Gilles Aubert. It's a simple pattern to tie and an excellent fly.
I mainly use it in small sizes
