Messing around with my newly acquired pheasant skins from @mt_flyfisher. They are awesome skins - thanks, John!

I used two feathers off of the ****bird skin to spin up this proven Jack Gartside pattern - the Sparrow Nymph. This is a great pattern - natural materials, contrast, lots of movement. If I drift this bug past any fish - there is a real good chance that it will get eaten!

Just a thought , maybe a "primitive chicken streamer " next has a lot of pheasant elements and is a pa creation from Darell Allen .

I actually have never heard of that pattern - I’ll definitely look it up.

Like most of the other flies you post, this is awesome. I love everything about this fly and am going to tie up a few of my own. I can see this working well for smallmouth and even carp, as well as trout.

Thanks. You’re absolutely right, the Sparrow Nymph is a great Smallmouth fly. The one I posted above is tied on a size 8 2XH 3XL hook. I also tie them on size 6 shorter shank hooks with medium black bead chain eyes for carp. I’ve caught a pile of carp over the years on the Sparrow nymph - they love it!

What do you use for the dubbing body?

It’s a custom blend that I made up of olive rabbit fur blended with natural gray squirrel fur (lots of guard hairs included). I just mixed it by hand (no fancy coffee grinder required). I tie it in with the split thread technique and it creates an incredibly buggy body.

Rib - Oval or fine flat gold or silver tinsel (gold more common)
Body - Black seal's sur or floss

Author's Note

This pattern came from the fine book by Peter O'Reilly, Trout & Salmon Flies of Ireland. He writes that this is an old River Moy fly, but is effective there and elsewhere. It's good all season in any water, clear or colored. Other variations are the Blue Goshawk, Orange Goshawk, and Black Goshawk.

Author's Note

Lakefork Orange is mentioned in Bruce Ferguson, Les Johnson, and Pat Trotters book, Fly Fishing for Pacific Salmon (which see), attributed to Don Hathaway, who tied it for the Salmon River in Idaho. This variation has a yellow collar and a touch of lime Krystal flash instead of a yellow Golden Pheasant crest topping.
