The Heathen. Tied on a Tiemco 2487, size 16 hook. This is a pattern of the late Randy Buchanan of Johnstown, PA. At many of the shows over the years I’ve always enjoyed stopping by Randy’s fly tying booth and spending a fair amount of time watching him tie and just chatting with him. I learned a lot from Randy over the years and miss not having him around anymore. He often shared this pattern as well as his very realistic stonefly pattern at the shows so I thought I would share “The Heathen” with the Fly Tying forum on PAFF.

Thanks for sharing that pattern for the Heathen, Norm.

I substituted medium size Amber Stretch Tubing for the Larva Lace on the “slip over” body. I also used red squirrel fur for the thorax on the one that I posted.

Hook - Single salmon
Thread - Red
Tail - Scarlet red and yellow hackle barbs mixed
Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel
Body - Dubbed with fluorescent yellow rabbit fur
Wing - White bucktail tied over the body, with an over wing of red bucktail.
Hackle - Scarlet red and yellow tied on as a collar mixed and tied back

This is a variation of an old American wet-fly pattern.
