Wing - Gray squirrel tail with an overwing of brown mink tail*
Cheeks - Jungle fowl
Hackle - Medium blue
Head - Black with a red center band

*I dont own mink tails so I used brown bucktail

Tail - Crimson red hackle barbs
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
Body - White chenille
Wing - White bucktail
Cheeks - Jungle fowl

Author's Note

Frank Dufresne originated this pattern. For lack of anything else to work with, Frank made the first fly with a red tail, cream wool body with a silver wire ribbing, and a polar bear wing.

American River Special

Tail - Brown
Ribbing - Narrow strip of dyed dark brown raffia or a double strand of brown unistretch
Body - Green chenille
Hackle - Furnace
Head - Black chenille

Author's Note

This is one of the several patterns developed for California's American River and christened with the same name.

Tip - Oval gold tinsel, two full turns
Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel
Body - Rear third, dubbed with red lamb's wool; the front two-thirds, dubbed with black lamb's wool
Hackle - Black tied on as a collar and tied back
Wing - Dyed black squirrel tail tied over the body

Author's Note

Clarence Gordon originated this pattern while he was working as a guide at North Umpqua's Steamboat Lodge. This fly has since been used successfully from Alaska to California.

Nice job, there’s a lot of good going on here. Hackle, yes, and picture is grainy so it’s a bit difficult to view
