Valley Creek, Chester/Montgomery County - 22/Dec/23

There is a club in downingtown that stocks west valley with brookies or at least they used to. I grew up in downingtown and learned to fly fish on west valley. fun lil creek in it's day. I haven't fished it in ages
I think west caln sportsman’s club may still stock west valley but the brandywine trout club (downingtown) does not.

The West Chester Fish, Game and Wildlife Club does stock West Valley. It runs kids' rodeos there and in fact has a nursery at the spring at Ravine Road.

I used to fish Valley frequently when i worked close by. Its been a long time now, probably havent fished it since 09. I'll never forget i caught my first ever wild trout there

Has anyone noticed how crazy the cfs at Valley has been for the past two months? For years when it would rain the cfs would spike up and then be back in the 20's before you'd wake up the next morning. But with all these 2 and 3 inch rainfall events we've had, it stays above 100 for days and it takes a good week or two before it's back in the 30's.

In late Dec, after a rainfall, debris from flooding was deposited high on the banks around the iron bridge, maybe 6 feet up. A few years ago, after a hurricane, a ranger said the water reached 11 feet at the bridge (what is it usually, 1 foot?). As explained here by previous posters, it's all related to the spread of impervious surfaces in the upstream and surrounding areas.

The ground water has been recharged by the heavy rains in the past few months which maintains a higher flow longer after the rain event.

Maybe stormwater basins in the area are discharging for extended periods because they are unusually full. If any are designed to discharge from two level, maybe both discharges are in action now.

Stormwater basins shouldn't discharge into an Exceptional Value Stream as designated by our great State...... but then we all know how that works.

I'm not gonna lie, since switching over to tightlining tactics a few years back, my success rate on the water has completely changed - for the better. It's not for everyone, I get it. But being in contact with my flies and managing my drifts has really made me a better angler.

Merry Christmas to all!
Are you also using a 10'+ nymphing rod? Nice day on Valley! I need to try that stream again

I am. An Echo 10' 3WT Shadow II which seems to work well for me. I'm not a "tackle junkie" and generally stick to rods in the couple hundred dollar range.

Stormwater basins are designed to collect and discharge water at a rate to prevent flooding/erosion and to mitigate impacts from impervious area that we as humans have built.

Often times these basins also help treat runoff as well.

I think the idea of the storm water basin is easily recognized. My complaint is that discharge into an EV stream is supposed to not have a negative impact. The storm water basins in the VC watershed are by and large from the 1970's and 1980's. How many of them have been maintained ? De-silted and kept at their proper elevation depth to maintain the design capacity ? The answer is none. There is no program for this with DEP as far as I know. I looked into this years ago with VFTU and we even floated the idea of trying to get grants to turn some of the basins into underground infiltration storm water system. Could get traction from any of the parties needed at the time. The reality is most of these basins are straight pass thrus and hold back very little water and when its discharged its awfully warm.....

To @AndyP's point. This was Ecology Park at 10:30 AM today.

Brook trout? We out here talking brook trout? Brook trout? - Allen Iverson

I have a better chance at Dua Lipa than those brookie eggs have at surviving in Valley 🙄

Malvern is effed up too....

I remember Iverson's comments about "practice". 🙂

Yeah, Valley often gets like that during/after a lot of rain. Much of the state prolly looks like that right about now. I know the NC region has gotten more than their share of rain lately. Kettle was 300+cfs over the historical max flows for the date.

Yeah, I am partly just being a wise-***, but I do find the color alarming.

I have also found that my old internal metrics of when it's storm chasing go time based on the TP gage have to be drastically altered in recent years.

I did catch a mess of fish on Friday in 75 CFS on a jigged bugger. I have nothing but respect for these invasive salmon-trout. You have to be pretty resilient to thrive in SEPA these days!
