Stroft? Can't say I've tried it (or even heard of it)???? What fly shops carry it?

I'm willing to give anything a try.

I will say that I generally end up not liking the "stronger for the diameter" types. They tend to be too stiff and brittle. It's not about getting smaller diameter, it's about getting more suppleness. Suppleness to diameter ratio, lol.

I've found copolymers in general win that game over nylon or flouro.

I do use flouro for steelhead, though. It's generally better for toothier critters, it seems to do better in cold, and there I do think the fish actually get line shy (as opposed to just drag shy).

I use Orvis SS & Mirage. It works well for me and gives me something to burn up my $25 off coupons. Rio is good stuff, but no coupons!

Ya, Stroft is German made like Maxima, so that is probably it. I may have a spool with me this afternoon if it is delivered. I found it on ebay. Of course I can assure you that you WILL NOT use what I bought. Let's just say it's under 6x. LOL.

That is correct sir and when I tried to sign up last year they denied me access, saying my email address was banned. They must have saw the PAFF OT forum and gotten me confused with you. LOL. I had to sign up under another email address. It is very much a global group and language barriers come up, but the secret hand shake is very cool.

How dare you. Bamboo is below the belt. I just planted some new rods in the yard last week. Should be ready for harvest in 2 yrs. I planted the bamboo by the greenie weenie patch, over by the glo bug bush.

It is interesting that Stroft compares their 3X against Orvis Mirage. Their 3X is 9.26 and Orvis Mirage is 6lb. However, we know Mirage is a fluro, so wonder why they did not do apples to apples? Orvis SS is 8.5lb. I am not sure I believe their statement about Orvis Mirage 3X being only 6lb but I can't find a chart for Orvis Mirage. The spool on their website shows their Mirage 6X at 3.6lb. I can't believe moving up from 6X to 3X Mirage would only result in a 6lb test Fluro. Orvis Mirage 6X is 3.6lb and Stroft 6X is 3.97. Little difference.

I do use Orvis SS for intermediate leader segments. It's fairly stiff stuff, I use it as a segway from my maxima to my real tippet. Is it a straight nylon, or a copolymer?

giantsjim, just get there early. Stream is fishing well and people are showing up in droves and early. Not uncommon to get there at 5:00 and already have someone in waterworks or papermill.

Stroft is STROng and sOFT thus the name. The stuff I received today is incredibly limp (like the Winston handshake, JayL) but it is also a silly fine diameter that I will not admit to. I have ordered 6X for a more direct comparison. Not sure on your question but here is a copy and paste from their site that may answer your question . . .

"STROFT® is a monofilament nylon that has been formulated and treated during production to produce a high-strength, controlled-stretch, material. A typical example is the 0.20 mm (.008inch, 3X) STROFT® with a strength of 4.20 kg (9.2 lbs).
This is 30% stronger than some other popular high-strength nylons.

STROFT® also provides superior knot strength. STROFT® GTM is produced using a multi-level tempering (heat-treatment) process to remove material stresses formed during extrusion, cooling, and drawing.
